Sat., Sept. 4 – vs. Monmouth (Hamilton, N.Y.), 6 p.m.
The Colgate football team will kickoff the 2010 season this week against Monmouth at 6 p.m. under the lights at Andy Kerr Stadium.
THE SERIES
This is the third meeting between Colgate and Monmouth, with the series tied 1-1. The Hawks won the first meeting 17-12 in 2006, but Colgate answered back with a 35-23 victory last season.
THE COACHES
Colgate head coach
Dick Biddle, who has the most wins in school history, is in his 15th season at the helm of the Raiders. His overall record is 113-51 and 1-1 against Monmouth. Biddle has won eight or more games in seven seasons during his career.
Monmouth head coach
Kevin Callahan is in his 18th campaign with the Hawks. He has compiled a mark of 101-72 at Monmouth, and is 58-33 in the Northeast Conference.
RAIDERS PICKED FIRST IN PATRIOT LEAGUE
The Colgate football team was picked to finish first in the Patriot League this season, in the conference's preseason poll of head coaches and sports information directors. The announcement came at the league's annual football media day at the Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Raiders topped the poll with a total of 46 points and six first place votes, while Lafayette placed second with 36 points and two first place votes. Lehigh (35 points, three first place votes) and Holy Cross (34 points, one first place vote) were selected third and fourth in the poll, followed by Bucknell (fifth, 17 points) and Georgetown (sixth, 12 points).
SULLIVAN NAMED PL PRESEASON OFFENSIVE POY
Senior quarterback
Greg Sullivan was named the Patriot League preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Sullivan, who is 18-4 as a starter, finished last season with 1,952 yards passing and 18 touchdowns. The versatile quarterback also ran for 788 yards and seven scores to help lead the Raiders to nine wins for the second-straight season.
RAIDERS RANKED 22ND IN TWO POLLS
The Colgate football team has been ranked 22nd in both the 2010 FCS Coaches preseason poll and the Sports Network/Fathead.com preseason poll.
Colgate received 98 total points in the FCS Coaches poll and 608 votes in the Sports Network/Fathead.com poll to rank 22nd. Holy Cross (25th) was the only other Patriot League team ranked in both polls.
EACHUS NAMED FCS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
Junior tailback
Nate Eachus was named to the Lindy's 2010 All-FCS Offensive Second-Team for the upcoming season.
In his first two seasons, Eachus has combined for 1,851 yards and 26 touchdowns on 359 carries. Last season, Eachus rushed for 919 yards and 16 touchdowns in just eight games, including a season-high 216 yards and five touchdowns against Lafayette
MONMOUTH NOTEBOOK
The Hawks return 14 starters from last season, in which they finished 5-6 overall, and 4-4 in the NEC.
Monmouth is led by junior quarterback Kyle Frazier, who threw for 1,453 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, while fifth-year senior Bobby Giles brings back the most experience in the backfield. Giles finished second on the team in rushing with 249 yards off 38 carries and caught seven passes for 58 yards and one touchdown in 2009.
On defense the Hawks return nine starters including defensive backs Kenny Amsel and Jose Gumbs. Amsel led the team with five interceptions and nine pass breakups last season. His five interceptions were tied for first among all NEC players, and 11th in the NCAA. Gumbs the reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Year, finished the season with a team-high 95 tackles, including 45 solo stops.

THE BIDDLE ERA
Colgate head coach
Dick Biddle is entering his 15th season with the Raiders. Biddle has an overall mark of 113-51. He has achieved the best winning percentage (.691) of any Colgate coach with seven or more years at the helm of the Raiders. Biddle is also the first Colgate coach to ever record nine straight seasons with seven or more victories.
He has been named Patriot League Coach of the Year four times while guiding the Raiders to six Patriot League titles and six appearances in the FCS (formally I-AA) playoffs.
In 2003, Biddle was named the American Football Coaches Association Division I-AA National Coach of the Year after leading the Raiders to a 15-1 record, and to the national championship game of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

In 14 seasons under head coach
Dick Biddle, the Raiders are 47-33 against non-conference teams for a winning percentage of .582. They have a 34-8 mark against the Ivy League.
