BETHLEHEM, PA. (4/3/2010) – Lehigh took advantage of a late Colgate error and pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to recording a come-from-behind 10-9 victory over the Raiders in the second game of a Patriot League softball doubleheader, Saturday at Kaufman Field. The Mountain Hawks won the first game 1-0.
Brooke Lewis' two-out bases loaded single to right center in the final frame provided the game-winning run as Lehigh won its fifth-consecutive game and improved to 16-8 overall.
The Raiders, who fell to 17-7 overall and 0-2 in league play, opened scoring in the top of the first on a run scoring single by Stephanie Hartquist (Homer, N.Y.) that plated Alana Dyson (Grovetown, Ga.) all the way from second. The lead grew to 4-0 after the top of the second. Emmie Dolfi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and Dyson each knocked in runs with singles, while Melissa Babb-Renta (Glenview, Ill.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to produce another run.
Up 3-1, the Raiders added a run in the third as Natalie Siedhof (Canton, Pa.) sent a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score Hartquist. However, the Mountain Hawks battled back and posted four runs in the bottom of the frame to take their first lead. Down 5-4, Colgate responded with a four-run fourth to regain the lead. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer to left by Nicole Siedhof (Canton, Pa.), her third of the year.
The lead was short lived as Lehigh answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth to square the game at 8-8.
Hartquist finished the second game a perfect four of four from the plate, while Amanda Zranchev (Budd Lake, N.J.) tallied a three-hit performance. Colgate amassed 11 hits in the loss.
Michelle Hollebeke (North Reading, Mass.) suffered the loss in relief. The sophomore pitched 3.2 innings; allowed two earned runs while fanning four batters. Lehigh took advantage of three Colgate errors by plating three unearned runs.
In the opener, Tiffany Curtis went the distance on a one-hitter to improve to 10-4 overall. The senior, who took a no-hitter into the last inning, hurler fanned seven batters in the victory.
The Mountain Hawks pushed across the game winning run in the fourth inning as a double by Liz Lucas scored Julie Fernandez. The Raiders did make things interesting in the seventh as Hartquist led off with a single before Nicole Siedhof advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. However, the sophomore was stranded at second as Curtis fanned the final two batters to preserve the victory. In the loss, Dyson's 15-game hitting streak came to a close.
Hollebeke was the tough luck loser. She went the distance on a five-hitter while striking out two.
Both teams will conclude the weekend series with a Sunday doubleheader beginning at noon at Kaufman Field.
