Box versus Hartford Box versus Manhattan
KISSIMMEE, FL (3/16/2010) – Alana Dyson (Grovetown, Ga.) and Nicole Siedhof (Canton, Pa.) combined to record four of seven hits as Colgate downed Manhattan 4-2 in softball action Tuesday. The Raiders dropped a 7-3 extra inning affair to the University of Hartford in the opening game.
Colgate, which moved to 9-3 overall, trailed 1-0 after the first inning. However, the Raiders knotted the game in the second as Stephanie Hartquist (Homer, N.Y.) scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Emmie Dolfi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.). Colgate received back-to-back singles by Melissa Babb-Renta (Glenview, Ill.) and Dyson to start the third. The duo then successfully performed a double steal that placed runners at second and third. Hartquist drove Babb-Renta home with a one-out sacrifice fly down the third baseline.
Up 2-1, Colgate added more insurance in the fifth inning with two more scores. Dyson and Jennifer Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) posted consecutive singles and then both advanced a base on Colgate's second double steal of the game. Hartquist delivered her second sacrifice fly of the contest to bring home Dyson from third. With two outs, Siedhof ripped a single to drive home Ortega.
Michelle Hollebeke (North Reading, Mass.) improved to 4-1 on the young season. The sophomore went the distance on a six-hitter and fanned four batters. Only one of Manhattan's two runs was earned.
Hartford banged two two-run homers in the top of the eighth inning en route to the victory. The Hawks also capitalized on three Colgate errors, which led to four unearned runs.
Down 1-0 in the fifth, Siedhof evened the game with a lead-off homer. Both teams traded two runs in the sixth. With the Hawks up 3-1, Dyson and Ortega posted back to back singles and then were successful once again on a double steal. Hartquist provided the big blow in the frame with a two-run double. The sophomore was the lone Raider with a multi-hit performance in going two of four.
Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, Va.) fell to 4-1 on the season. The senior struck out five batters in eight innings and allowed only three earned runs.
Colgate will play in-state foe, Columbia at 9 a.m. and then will wind up the day facing Green Bay at 1 p.m.
