BROOKLYN, N.Y. (11/26/10) – The Colgate women's basketball team suffered its fourth loss of the season when it fell to Boston University 78-56 at the LIU Turkey Classic on Friday afternoon. Senior
Taylor Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) led the team, posting 17 points and five rebounds while freshman
Lauryn Kobiela (Charlotte, N.C.) contributed ten points for the Raiders.
The Terriers got on the board first with a pair of free throws in the first two minutes to take the lead. Colgate (2-4) answered back seconds later with a layup to even the score. The teams then continued to trade baskets, but it was BU that was able to extend its lead, going on an 11-2 run to take the 13-4 lead. However, midway through the half, the Terriers struggled to make plays, and by the eight minute mark the Raiders had cut the lead down to five points. But despite the come back, BU maintained a 29-21 advantage going into half time.
Colgate jumped out to an explosive start, opening scoring in the second half. BU soon followed suit, finding its rhythm once again and extending the scoring margin by as much as 24 points at the 9:37 mark. The Raiders continued to fight back throughout the rest of the half, but in the end it was the Terriors that were able to secure the win and advance to the championship game.
Colgate was 18-24 from the line and had a 35.3 field goal percentage while BU was 14-19 from the charity stripe and had a 39.1 field goal percentage.
“We needed to do a better job in our transition defense and take better care of the ball, both with our handles and post entry passing,” stated head coach
Pam Bass. “Overall I felt we did a good job of attacking off the dribble and I thought Lauryn and Tayler did a good job. Our focus now is on tomorrow's game.”
Colgate will now play in the consolation game tomorrow at 2 p.m. against McNeese State, which fell to host Long Island 71-56 in the first game of the classic on Friday. Boston University will face the Blackbirds in the championship game at 4 p.m.
