HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/20/10)
– Despite a late come back in the final minutes of the game, the Colgate women's basketball could not secure the win, falling to Canisius 70-65 on Saturday afternoon on Cotterell Court. Senior Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the team with a game-high 15 points and a team-high six rebounds while sophomore Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) contributed 13 points and four assists for the Raiders.

Colgate (1-3) opened scoring with  a free throw and a jumper to give them the 3-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Feeling the effects of a slow start, the Griffins soon picked up the pace and came back on an eight-point run to take the 8-3 lead minutes later. As the half progressed, the Raiders had difficulty getting the ball to fall for them. Canisus did not hesitate to take advantage of Colgate's misfortunes, extending its lead by as much as an 18 point margin at the 7:46 mark with a 30-12 advantage. However, as the half came to a close, the Raiders finally began to find their rhythm again, making a 15-point come back in the last six minutes of play to cut the lead to 10 points for a 39-29 halftime score.

In the second half, Colgate came out playing more aggressively as they attempted to make a comeback. The team's first surge came in the 14th minute, when Colgate made a 14-4 run to put the score at 46-43. Canisius then picked up their intensity, extending their lead once again. The Raiders responded by putting pressure on the Griffins, forcing the team to make one turnover after another. Colgate then made a series of plays to cut the lead down to a two-point game with just 1:36 left to play. However, in the end it was not enough to topple Canisus, who was able to retain the lead and secure its first win of the season.

The Raiders shot 64 percent from the line and was 7-of-13 from beyond the arch. The Griffins out rebounded Colgate 42-32 and shot 79.3 percent from the charity stripe.

“The team showed our fight today,” stated head coach Pam Bass. “Canisius did a good job early taking us out of our tempo and winning the battle of the boards. We did a good job of drawing fouls. All we need now is to finish from the line.”

Colgate will resume play next week when it travels to Staten Island, N.Y. for a matchup against Wagner on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m.
