BOX SCORE

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/19/10) –
The Colgate men's hockey team came up short in its fifth ECAC Hockey game of the season with a 5-2 loss to Brown on Friday night at Starr Rink.

The two teams scored five different ways in the game with Brown earning two power play goals, a shorthanded goal and an empty netter late in the third period. Colgate had an even strength goal and an extra attacker score in the final frame.

Colgate (2-6-1, 0-4-1 ECAC) got goals from junior Matt Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and sophomore Robbie Bourdon (Montreal, Que.), while junior goaltender Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) mad 20 stops between the pipes.

Brown (2-2-1, 1-1-1 ECAC) saw Jack Maclellan tally a goal and two assists for three points, while Chris Zaires, Bobby Farnham and Dennis Robertson posted two points with a goal and an assist apiece. Jeff Buvinow had two assists in the win and Mike Clemente made 28 saves in net to earn his first win of the season.

The Bears got on the board first with 10:28 remaining in the first as Zaires knocked home his own rebound from the left circle to make it 1-0 on a 5-on-3 power play. Colgate answered back in the second period as Firman scored his first of the season with 11:28 left. Senior Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) and junior Corbin McPherson (Folsom, Calif.) had both of their shots blocked and Firman was there for the rebound on McPherson's and scored. Mayer and McPherson were credited with the assists.

Brown scored again on a 5-on-3 advantage in the second period to start a streak of three straight. Robertson scored from the top of the right circle after passes from Maclelland and Buvinow on the perimeter of the defense. After taking back the lead at 2-1, the Bears scored their second shorthanded goal of the season, coming from Booby Farnham. Colgate gave the puck away at the offensive blueline. Maclelland was there to deflect the pass and drove down the ice on a 2-on-1 break. He found a hustling Farnham in stride at the top of the crease and he hit the net for the 3-1 lead.

David Brownschidle made it 4-1 with 4:24 left in the final frame. Garnett Hathaway was behind the net and slid a pass through the defense and onto Brownschidle's stick and he beat Evin to increase the lead.

The Raiders got one back with the extra attacker as coach Don Vaughan pulled Evin at the 3:28 mark. Colgate answered 43 seconds later as Bourdon added his third of the season to cut the lead to 4-2 with the assists to sophomore Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.) and senior Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.). The lead, however, was too much to overcome as Maclelland tallied his third point with an empty netter with 33 seconds left in the game with assists going to Farnham and Zaires as the Bears closed out the game with a 5-2 defeat of the Raiders.

Colgate outshot Brown by a 30-25 margin, but went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Bears capitalized on two 5-on-3 power plays and ended the night 2-for-7 with the extra skater.

Fifth-ranked Yale is up next for the Raiders at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Starr Rink. The Bulldogs bring their undefeated league record of 3-0-0 after beating Cornell by a 4-2 margin tonight at the Big Red.

NOTES: The Raiders gave up their first shorthanded goal of the season … Brown won for the only the fifth time in Hamilton in the history of the series … the Raiders outshot their opponents for the eight time in nine games … Bourdon is now second on the team in goals with three … Brisebois tallied his team-high sixth assist tonight and first since a three-assist output at Lake Superior State.
