HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/30/2010)– Mike McKenzie was credited with the game-winning goal with 42 seconds remaining in overtime as visiting St. Lawrence edged Colgate 3-2 in men's hockey action, Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
Travis Vermeulen fired on net from the right wing boards and the puck glanced off the skate of McKenzie into the net. With the goal, the Saints upped their record to 14-9-4 overall and 8-4-2 in ECAC Hockey action. Colgate's unbeaten streak came to a close at four.
After a scoreless first period, the Raiders opened scoring at 10:31 of the second as Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) came down the right wing boards and fed Matt Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.). The sophomore cruised in towards the net and beat goalie Kain Tisi glove side for his fifth of the year. Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) made the initial pass to break Day and Firman in on the two on one.
After Aaron Bogosian tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at 1:18, the Raiders immediately battled back. Day deflected in a shot fired on net by Nathan Sinz (Anchorage, Alaska) for his 16th goal of the year at 1:57. Smith was credited with a secondary assist for feeding Sinz out top.
St. Lawrence answered back at 8:07 on Brandon Bollig's fifth of the year.
Colgate out shot the Saints 33-31 on the evening. Tisi finished with 31 saves, while Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) turned aside 28 shots. The sophomore made six saves in overtime before the game winner was scored.
The Raiders' power play failed to convert on six man advantage opportunities, while St. Lawrence converted on one of three.
Colgate, which fell to 10-10-5 overall and 7-5-1 in league action, returns to action Friday evening at Princeton. Opening face-off is set for a 7 p.m. start.
