Raiders' Season Ends In Overtime Loss at Quinnipiac

Austin Smith sent the game into overtime with his 17th of the year.
HAMDEN, CONN.  (3/8/09) – Brandon Wong's goal at 13:13 of overtime lifted Quinnipiac to a 4-3 victory over Colgate in the third and deciding game of a first round ECAC Hockey Tournament series, Sunday evening at TD Bank North Sports Complex.

Trailing 3-2, Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) knotted the game at 16:13 of the third period with his fourth goal of the series.  The freshman roofed a shot from the right side behind Fisher and sent Colgate into its seventh-straight and 19th overtime game of the season.  Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) and Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) each received helpers on Smith's 17th of the year.

The Bobcats had to kill off a penalty right from the start as Zach Hansen hauled down David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) in the closing seconds of the second period as Colgate made one final rush into the offensive zone.

Quinnipiac, which trailed 2-1 after the first period, took the lead with back to back goals from Mike Atkinson at 3:08 and Eric Lampe at 9:58 of the second to take the 3-2 lead into the third period.

Despite coming out and taking territorial control like in the first game of the series, Colgate found itself down 1-0 early at 3:34.  On an odd-man rush, Chris Myers dropped the puck off to Greg Holt just inside the blueline on the left side and the junior wristed a shot to the far side by Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).

Not too long after the announcement of the Bobcats' goal, the game was knotted at 1-1.  At 4:06, Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) collected his 14th of the year from Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) and Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wisc.).  Fredricks moved the puck to Bogdanich and the senior fired the puck on net from the right side.  The puck got through the defense and goalie Bud Fisher, but did didn't cross the line until Day punched it into the open net.

Colgate ended the scoring in the opening period with a power play goal at 9:39 as Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) sent a back hander underneath the pads of Fisher.  Both Day and Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) assisted on the junior's fifth of the year.  The Raiders not only went into the locker room with the lead, but held a 16-5 shot advantage in the opening period.

Long finished with 31 saves as the Raiders' season ended with over half of the game ending with an overtime session.  Colgate finished with a 12-18-7 mark.
