Colgate Breaks National Record In Overtime Loss to Quinnipiac

Peter Bogdanich nets another goal against Bobcats in 3-2 overtime loss.
HAMDEN, CONN. (3/6/09) – Brandon Wong scored the game winner with 9:31 left in overtime to lead Quinnipiac to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Colgate in the opening game of a three-game series, Friday evening at TD Banknorth Sports Center.

The Bobcats, who improved to 17-15-3 overall, capitalized on a turnover in their offensive zone.  Quinnipiac's first offering on net was saved before the junior poked the puck across the goal line for the game winner,

Colgate appeared like it was leaving with a victory 5:46 into overtime as Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) beat Bud Fisher with what would have been his second goal of the game.  However, the goal was waived off moments after it went into the net, due to a tough slashing penalty called against the Raiders,

After having the territorial advantage for much of the first five minutes, Colgate broke out on top at 14:50 of the first.  Senior Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) won the battle for the face-off and sent the puck from inside the right circle into the right side of the cage by Fisher.  It was Riley's fourth goal of the year and second in the last three games.

Less than three minutes later, Colgate missed a golden opportunity to take a two-goal advantage as David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) sprung Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) loose on a breakaway.  The sophomore cruised into the offensive zone from the right side and broke in on Fisher.  Day's backhand attempt was saved with 12:03 remaining in the first period.

The Raiders eventually got that two-goal cushion with exactly two minutes left in the first.  Twelve seconds into a power play, Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wisc.) and McIntyre worked the puck to Bogdanich. The senior followed by one timing a shot from the right side circle dot and beat Fisher glove side.  It was the senior's fifth goal of the year and seventh career marker versus Quinnipiac.  The Raiders took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Bobcats shaved into the deficit 6:38 into the second period as Jean-Marc Beaudoin snapped a shot to the right side by Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).  The junior collected his 12th of the campaign from Zach Hansen and David Marshall.  The second period ended with the Raiders holding a one-goal lead.

Quinnipiac got the equalizer 3:54 into the third.  The Bobcats took advantage of a five-minute major called against Colgate as David Marshall tipped in a blast from out top by Hansen 12 seconds into the power play.

Colgate outshot Quinnipiac 33-30.  Long saved 27 shots in net for the Raiders, while Fisher stopped 31.

The overtime marked Colgate's 17th of the season, which now serves as the all-time single season national record.  It was the Raiders fifth consecutive game in which required an extra session.

Colgate, which fell for the first time in six games, returns to action Saturday evening needing a victory to extend its season.
