Wejnert and Kozlowski Combine for 28 Points in Loss to Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MASS. (2/25/09) -   Sophomore Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) led the Colgate women's basketball team with 18 points, but it wasn't enough as the Raiders fell to Holy Cross, 75-57 on Wednesday night.  With the loss, Colgate falls to 5-23 overall and 1-12 in the Patriot League while the Crusaders improve to 13-15 overall and 8-5 in the conference.

 

Colgate's leading scorer, Wejnert also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while classmate Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) added 10 points and five rebounds.  Freshman Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) contributed 10 points and five assists.

 

The Crusaders were the first to score in the game, netting back-to-back baskets to gain a five point lead before Colgate's Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) knocked down her first three-point basket to make it 5-3 three minutes into the first half.  The Raiders gained their first lead of the game, 8-7, with 13:12 left in the half.  Three minutes later the game was tied at 14, but the Crusaders started to pull away going on a 16-5 run to gain an 11 point lead with just under five minutes left in the half.  Holy Cross extended their advantage to 12 points, 38-26, to close out the half.

 

The Raiders shot 38.5 percent (10-26) from the field in the first half.  Holy Cross finished the half with 53.3 percent (16-30) shooting from the floor.  The Crusaders out-rebounded Colgate 16-12 in the half.

 

Holy Cross extended their advantage to 17 points with nine minutes remaining in the second half, but the Raiders cut that lead in half just two minutes later as Green and Kozlowski combined for eight points, including two baskets from behind the arc.  The Crusaders lead proved to be too much, as they outscored the Raiders 12-6 in the final five minutes of play for the victory.

 

Holy Cross had four players score in double-digits, led by Briana McFadden who led all scorers with 19 points.  Whitney Fremeau added another 18 points and Bethany O'Dell had eight boards for the Crusaders. 

 

Colgate shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the floor overall and went 7-10 from the free throw line.  The Crusaders finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (27-54) for the game and out-rebounded the Raiders 39-25.

 

The Raiders will be back in action this Saturday when they host Navy to close out the regular season on Cotterell Court.  Tip-off is set for 2:07 p.m.
