HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/21/09) – David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) scored twice, including the game winner with 1:01 remaining in overtime as Colgate rallied from behind to defeat visiting Rensselaer 2-1 in overtime, Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
The junior took a pass from Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) from behind the net and punched it in the right side of the cage behind Engineer goalie Allen York. Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.), who also assisted on the game winning goal, opened the play by winning the face-off. With the victory, Colgate improved to 10-16-6 overall/5-11-4 in ECAC Hockey play. The move pushes the Raiders over the Engineers in the league standings.
The winner was McIntyre's third career goal in overtime, second this season. He tallied the game winner with one second left in overtime to give the Raiders a 3-2 win versus Maine, December 27 in Florida. McIntyre's other came in double overtime of a three-game series at Clarkson as Colgate upset the then seventh ranked Golden Knights to advance to the ECAC semifinals last season.
The Engineers, who tumbled to 7-23-2 overall and 6-13-1 in league play, opened the scoring at 15:49 of the first period as Joel Malchuk connected for his first career goal from Kurt Colling and Jordan Watts. Rensselaer took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Raiders got the equalizer at 14:25 of the second as McIntyre stole the puck from just inside the defensive zone and cruised in on York on a breakaway. The junior beat the freshman five-hole for his 18th of the year.
With the game tied at 1-1, Rensselaer needed to kill off four penalties in the final period including a five-minute major for boarding, which occurred right before the end of the second period, to help force overtime.
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) evened his record at 8-8-5 with a 19-save performance. The junior turned aside 54 of 57 shots this weekend as Colgate went 1-0-1. York finished with 27 saves in net for the Engineers.
With the victory, the Raiders successfully avenged an earlier 3-2 overtime setback at the hands of the Engineers on January 16. Colgate also stretched its unbeaten streak to nine games versus Rensselaer at Starr Rink.
The Raiders, who outshot Rensselaer 29-20, failed to convert on six power play opportunities, while the Engineers went scoreless on three attempts.
The overtime game, not only marked the second on this weekend for Colgate, but the 14th of the season. The Raiders are now 4-4-6 in overtime games.
Colgate, which has played in 20 games decided by one goal or less this season, returns to action, Friday evening as it travels to face Brown. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Providence.
