DURHAM, N.C. (2/20/09) – Brad Ross scored with 2:51 remaining in the game to give the 5th-ranked Duke Blue Devils a 9-8 win over Colgate in men's lacrosse action, Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Colgate battled back from a six goal deficit to tie the game 8-8 late in the fourth quarter, as senior
Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) beat Rob Schroeder with a low dump shot at the 4:30 mark. Duke responded a minute later with Ross' goal and was able to hold off the Raiders late attack including three shots from Corp for it second win of the season.
Corp scored four times and classmate
Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) added three more to bring Colgate back in the second half. Both added an assist the as Colleluori had a four-point evening, while Corp had five-point performance. This was Corp's 35th straight game of scoring.
Duke opened the scoring early grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first quarter out-shooting the Raiders 10-1. Corp registered the first for Colgate at 9:00 mark in the second off a failed clear by the Blue Devils. Freshman Chris Zelinski (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded the assist, for his first collegiate point.
Duke responded with four goals in a three-minute span to extend its lead to 7-1 with 5:48 remaining in the half. Corp stopped the bleeding with an unassisted goal at the 5:00 mark, then followed with his third of the half off an assist from Colleluori to head into the lockeroom down, 7-3.
Duke began the second half with a man-up and took advantage of it as Ned Crotty beat junior
Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) to extend the Blue Devils lead to 8-3. Colleluori would begin the come back with his first of the game at the 5:00 mark in the third. Corp was positioned directly behind the goal and found Colleluori in front for a short goal. Sophomore
Rob Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) registered his first career goal two-minutes later to trim the lead to, 8-5.
The closing minute of the third was filled with Colgate momentum as Colleluori scored unassisted on a failed clear by Duke with 30 seconds remaining, then followed with his third of the period in the closing second. Duke turned the ball over with seven seconds remaining, senior
Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) then found Colleluori alone in front of the crease with a 50-yard bomb. Colgate scored the final four goals in the quarter to narrow the gap to 8-7.
Harrington tallied 13 stops in goal for Colgate, while Schroeder posted five for the Blue Devils. Duke held the advantage in shots 41-26, including a 23-8 advantage in the first half.
Colgate continues the ACC road trip Sunday at fourth-ranked North Carolina. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
