The Raiders will open the week with their first road game of the season followed by a home double-header with the men's squad to close out the holiday week. Colgate will face Mt. St. Mary's Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. in Emmitsburg, Md. before hosting Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. on Cotterell Court.
Scouting the Mounts
Mt. St. Mary's is off to a 2-1 start this season after defeating Canisius in its season opener, 55-51, before falling to Duquesne last Wednesday, Nov. 18, 88-63. The Mounts bounced back from the loss to defeat Radford, 52-49, the following Saturday, Nov. 21. Mary Dunn is currently leading the squad in the scoring column averaging 11.3 points per game after picking up a game-high 16 points against Canisius and a team-high 13 points against Duquesne. Dunn also is on top on the boards averaging 6.7 rebounds per game for the Mounts. Following Dunn is Sandra Andresson averaging 10.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds along with Lauren Howell who is averaging 10.0 points per game. Hassanah Oliver leads the Mounts in assists with 11 this season. Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his third season with the Mounts after posting a 14-16 overall record during the 2008-09 season.
Scouting the Blue Devils
Central Connecticut State will enter Colgate with a 1-3 overall record this Saturday. The Blue Devils only win this season was against Fordham, 64-57, on Nov. 18th. CCSU's three losses were all by a margin of just five points or less. One of those losses came at the hands of the Raiders' fellow Patriot League opponent, Holy Cross, a 55-50 loss in the Blue Devils second game of the season. Leanne Crockett is the current overall leader on the squad averaging 15.0 points per game along with 12.3 rebounds per game. Shontice Simmons adds an average of 14.0 points per game and has a total of 15 assists in four games. Head coach Beryl Piper is in her third season at the helm of the Blue Devils' program. Last year, she guided the women's team to an 18-14 overall record, earning 14 more victories than the previous season.
Last Time Out
The Colgate women's basketball team got off to a 4-0 start for the first time in program history after defeating Wagner, 72-59, last Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court. The Raiders improved to 4-0 while the Seahawks dropped to 0-3 this season. Junior Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Colgate offense with 19 points while going 4-8 from the free throw line. The Raiders had three other players reach double digits with sophomore Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) adding 14 points and a game-high five assists. Rookie Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) added 12 points and junior Kendra Brim (Buffalo, N.Y.) picked up 10 points. Sophomore Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) led Colgate on the boards pulling down eight rebounds. Colgate finished the game shooting 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor and 55.6 percent (10-18) from three-point range. The Seahawks also shot 43.1 percent (22-51) but were just 3-13 (23.1 percent) from behind the arc. The Raiders held the advantage on the boards leading in rebounds 37-31.
Series vs. Mt. St. Mary's/Central Connecticut State
Mt. St. Mary's- The two teams are tied at 2-2 in the all-time series, with the Raiders dropping the most recent meeting during the 2008-09 season. Last season the Raiders fell to the Mount in their season opener, 60-39.
Candice Green led Colgate in scoring with 10 points, followed by
Katie Garman and
Kelly Korkowski with seven points apiece.
Tricia Oakes pulled down a team-high seven boards and three blocks in the matchup.
Central Connecticut State – The Blue Devils hold an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series, including wins in the last two meetings. The Raiders suffered an 83-63 loss at Central Connecticut last year on Dec. 31st.
Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) scored a career-high 20 points and added six rebounds to lead the Raiders. Four other players had eight points for Colgate but the Blue Devils', who were led by Kerrianne Dugan with 21 points, came out with the win.
Weekly Honors
Freshman guard Jhazmine Lynch was selected as the Anaconda Patriot League Rookie of the Week the league office announced Monday afternoon. Lynch led the Raiders in a 72-65 victory against Rider scoring a career-high 25 points while collecting four assists three rebounds and two steals. The freshman averaged 14.7 points in Colgate's three games wins last week, along with 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals. Lynch connected on 42.3 percent of the field goals and was 20-of-22 from the free throw line. This marks the first-ever weekly honor for Lynch and the first for a Raider this season.
Top Returners
The Raiders return 10 players to this year's squad, including four starters from the 2008-09 season. Junior
Tayler Wejnert returns to the Colgate squad after appearing in 20 games last season. Wejnert led the team in scoring averaging 11.7 points per game, followed by fellow junior
Sami Kozlowski who averaged 9.7 points and led the team in steals with 33 in 30 starts with the Raiders.
Tricia Oakes led Colgate on the boards as a freshman, pulling down 6.0 rebounds in 22 games. Sophomore
Candice Green also started in all 30 games for the Raiders last season averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Preseason Picks
The Colgate women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason coaches and sports information directors poll. Defending champion Lehigh was selected to repeat this year, with 97 total points and 13-first place votes. Following the Mountain Hawks in order are American (76, 3 first-place), Holy Cross (76), Navy (54), Bucknell (52), Army (50), Colgate (22) and Lafayette (21). Lehigh's Erica Prosser was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year.
