Box Score
FORT WORTH, Texas (11/23/09) – Sophomore forward
Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) scored a career-high 25 points on 12-16 shooting, but it wasn't enough as TCU came away with a 76-63 win in the consolation round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament.
Senior guard
Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.) matched a season-high with 18 points, but no other Raider aside from Roemer and Gyawu managed to score more than five points on the night.
The Horned Frogs (3-2) started the game on a 19-2 run in the first 7:36 of the first half, as guards Greg Moss and Edvinas Ruzgas combined for 13 points during that stretch. Roemer ended the run with a three-pointer, his only basket of the half. The two teams traded buckets for the rest of the half, with Gyawu scoring 11 points before intermission. TCU took a 40-26 lead into the locker room thanks in part to 14 points from Moss and 11 from forward Zvonko Buljan.
The closest Colgate would come to the Horned Frogs in the second half was eight points, which the Raiders achieved on two separate occasions. Colgate cut the Frogs lead to 51-43 midway through the second half after junior point guard
Joe Hoban (West Chester, Pa.) stole the ball and dished it to Gyawu, who laid in a pair. Gyawu would later slam in a fast break dunk after a steal, closing the gap to 62-54 with just 5:07 remaining. However, a 7-0 TCU run sealed the deal for the Horned Frogs.
Three-pointers did the Raiders in on this night. The Horned Frogs went 12-30 from downtown, while Colgate was cold from beyond the arc 5-19. Moss went 5-8 from three-point range en route to scoring 20 points and 9 assists. On the glass, the two teams both grabbed 33 rebounds. Hoban and senior forward
Ben Jonson (Dallas, Texas) each led Colgate with five boards, while Buljan pitched in a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Horned Frogs.
Colgate (0-3) will finish its 2009 Preseason NIT appearance with a game against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. EDT, in Fort Worth, Texas.
