Brim Scores Career-high as Colgate Wins Third Straight

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/18/09) -   The Colgate women's basketball team defeated Alabama State, 66-57, to earn their third consecutive win and open the season with an undefeated record of 3-0.  The last time the Raiders opened the year 3-0 was during the 2003-04 season.

Junior Kendra Brim (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored a career-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds for her first ever double-double.  Classmate Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) followed with 13 points while sophomore Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) recorded 11 points and pulled down eight boards.

The Raiders dominated the first half of play, shooting 62.5 percent from behind the arc and going 8-8 from the charity stripe.  Kozlowski led Colgate in the half, scoring nine of her 13 points in the opening 20 minutes.  Senior Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) went 2-2 from three-point range, hitting her second three of the night with 2:22 left on the clock, to give the Raiders a 16-point lead, 37-21.

The Hornets shot just 32.1 percent from the field and were 3-9 from behind the arc as they went into the half-time break down by 14, 37-23.

The Raiders continued to hold the advantage throughout the second half, gaining their largest lead of the game, 56-39, after Brim hit a three followed by a lay-up after the Raiders forced the turnover on their defensive end.

Alabama State began to slowly chip away at Colgate's lead in the final minutes of the game, cutting the Raiders lead to just seven with 1:09 remaining.  Despite the Hornets full-court press throughout the second half, Colgate never once lost the lead and was able to hold on for the 66-57 victory.

The Hornets were led by Nikel White with 15 points and nine rebounds followed by Erica Henderson and Tanika Jackson with seven points apiece.  Fifteen players saw playing time for Alabama State.

Colgate shot 36.1 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range.  Alabama State finished on 35.7 percent shooting and went 12-18 from the free throw line.  The Raiders held a slight advantage on the boards 41-40.

The Raiders will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 21st, when they take on the Wagner Seahawks at 2 p.m. on Cotterell Court.
