ANNAPOLIS, Md. (1/31/09) - The Colgate women's basketball team fell to Navy 48-40, at Alumni Hall on Saturday night. The women drop to 4-18 overall and 0-7 in the Patriot League, while the Midshipmen improve to 12-10 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Junior Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) and freshman Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) led the Raiders in scoring with eight points apiece. Sophomore Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the team in rebounding with 10 boards, followed by senior Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) with nine.
Navy jumped out to a 9-4 lead, four minutes into the first half as top-scorer Cassie Consedine led the Mids with five points in the opening two minutes. Colgate, however, tied the game at 11 with 12:34 on the clock after a good three-pointer from Polinski. The Raiders then went on a 13-5 run to gain an eight point advantage, 24-16, with 7:09 remaining in the half. Colgate entered the half-time break with a 26-24 point lead.
The Raiders shot 37.0 percent (10-27) from the field in the first half and went 3-8 from behind the arc. Navy finished the half with 33.0 percent (10-30) shooting from the floor. Colgate topped Navy on the boards 22-18, in the half.
Navy regained the lead in the second half after Angela Myers put in a lay-up to make it 31-28. The Raiders tied the game at 31 after Garman connected on a long-range shot with 9:41 remaining in the game. Navy responded by going on a 16-8 run in the remaining minutes to edge out Colgate 48-40.
Colgate finished the game shooting 32.0 percent (16-50) and went 3-11 from the free throw line (27.3 percent). Navy closed out the game with 32.1 percent (17-53) shooting but finished 10-15 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe. The Raiders topped Navy 45-34 in rebounds.
The Raiders will be back in action Saturday, February 7th when they take on Army, for their second meeting this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
