Raiders Fall at St. Lawrence

Brian Day netted three power play goals this weekend.
CANTON, N.Y. (1/31/09)  – Matt Generous netted two goals to pace St. Lawrence to a 4-2 victory over Colgate, Saturday evening in an ECAC men's hockey clash at Appleton Arena.

The Saints trailed 1-0 early in, but scored four unanswered goals en route to improving to 14-10-2 overall (6-6-2 in league play).  Colgate fell to 7-14-5 overall and 2-9-3 in ECAC Hockey.

Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) opened the scoring for Colgate on the power play at 3:31 of the opening frame.  The sophomore tallied his third power play goal of the weekend and a league leading sixth of the year from Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.).

Trailing 1-0, the Saints got goals from Generous and Mike McKenzie at 11:28 and 12:10 respectively in the opening period to grab the lead for good.  St. Lawrence went into intermission holding a 2-1
advantage.

The Saints upped the advantage to 3-1 right before the horn sounded for second intermission.  Generous tallied his second of the evening at 19:21 on the power play to give St. Lawrence added cushion.  The lead grew to three at 4:41 of the third on another power play goal, this time by Shawn Fensel.

Colgate capitalized on the power play in the third period.  After Jeff Caister was assessed a five-minute major for hitting from behind and a 10-minute misconduct, Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) beat Alex Petizian at 7:50 to pull within two scores.  David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) were credited with assists on St. Pierre's second goal of the year.

St. Lawrence outshot the Raiders 32-16.  Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) was credited with 20 saves in 44:41 minutes of action before being replaced by Bryan Bessette (Melrose, N.Y.).  The freshman finished the game with a career-high eight stops in the final 15:19.  Petizian saved 14 of 16 shots in the victory for the Saints.

Colgate returns to action Friday evening as it hosts nationally ranked Princeton.  Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.
