Veazey Leads Navy To A 75-64 Win Over Colgate

Anthony Hill had nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds for the Raiders.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/31/09) – Mark Veazey scored 17 points, all in the second half, and added 11 rebounds to lead Navy to a 75-64 Patriot League win over Colgate Saturday night at Cotterell Court.

 

Navy (15-7, PL 4-3) snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Raiders.  Colgate falls to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the league.

 

The Midshipmen had three other players in doubles figures getting 17 points from Chris Harris, followed by Kaleo Kina with 15 and Adam Teague with 11.

 

Freshman forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, GA) and Ben Jonson (Dallas, TX) led Colgate with 16 apiece, while Mike Venezia (Westfield, NJ) added 10.  Colgate freshman guard Anthony Hill (Plano, TX) tallied nine points, and a career-high 10 rebounds.

 

After Colgate scored the opening bucket of the contest, Navy came back with 11 straight points for a nine-point lead with 15:42 left.  The Raiders rallied with a 17-6 run to take a 19-17 lead on four straight points from freshman Nick Pascale (Dewitt, NY) with 8:12 remaining.

 

The lead continued to see-saw back-and-forth with Colgate scoring the final three points of the first half to tie the contest 32-32 at halftime.

 

In the second half, Colgate jumped out to a six-point advantage, 40-34, behind five points from Gyawu.  The Midshipmen responded with a 13-4 run to open a five-point advantage with 12:45 left, and never trailed the remainder of the contest.

 

The foul line proved to be the big difference in the game with Navy hitting on 23-of-27 attempts (85 percent), while Colgate managed only 18-of-28 (64 percent).  The Midshipmen out-rebounded the home team, 43-41.
