Day Scores Twice in Colgate Victory Over Clarkson

Brian Day
POTSDAM, N.Y.  (1/30/09) – Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) posted his third multi-goal game of the year and Matt Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.) tallied his first collegiate goal as visiting Colgate snapped a five game winless skid downing Clarkson 3-1 in an ECAC Hockey men's clash, Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Raiders, who upped their record to 7-13-5 overall and 2-8-3 in league action, improved to 2-0-4 in its last six regular-season meetings versus the Golden Knights in the North Country.  The last loss at Cheel Arena the Raiders suffered was a 6-0 defeat on January 4, 2003.  It was also Colgate's third straight victory in Potsdam dating back to the final two games of an ECAC Hockey quarterfinal matchup in March, 2008.

It didn't take the Raiders long to get on the board.  Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) moved the puck up the left hand side of the rink and eventually got the puck to Firman.  The freshman deflected a shot and beat his former Northwood School teammate Richie LaVeau five hole from the top of the crease at the 1:58 mark for his first goal at Colgate.  It also served as his first collegiate point as well.  Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wisc.) was also credited with an assist on Firman's goal.  The Raiders took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Clarkson, which fell for the first time in five games, tied the game on a power play goal at 14:19 of the second as Chris D'Alvise fired a shot from the right circle by starting netminder Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).

Colgate regained the lead at 2-1 as Day connected on the power play at 4:09 of the third period.  The sophomore took a pass from behind the net by David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and one-timed it by LeVeau from right out in front of the cage.  Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) also assisted on the goal.

Day ended the game with an empty net power play goal with just seven seconds left in the game.  It was his 12th score of the year.

Clarkson outshot Colgate 27-24.  Long turned aside 26 of 27 shots en route to gaining the win.  LaVeau stopped 21 Raider shots.

The Raiders went two of six on the power play, while the Golden Knights connected on one of three man advantages.

Colgate returns to action, Saturday evening as it plays at St. Lawrence.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
