Gniewek Wins Three Events, But Raiders Fall to Bearcats

HAMILTON, N.Y.  (1/24/09) – Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted three of four individual victories for Colgate, but it wasn't enough as Binghamton handed the Raiders a 158-136 defeat in men's swimming action, Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.

Colgate, 1-6 overall, pressed the visiting Bearcats the entire meet.  Binghamton went one-two in the 400 IM and then captured the final event, the 400 free relay en route to the victory.

Gniewek led two of three Colgate one-two-three sweeps in events.  The sophomore claimed the 100 free with a winning time of 47.75 ahead of Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) and George Bennitt (West Chester, Pa.) who posted times of 48.59 and 49.54 respectively.  Gniewek returned and took the top spot in the 100 fly with a winning time of 52.00, ahead of Hadjipateras (52.29) and Henry Bottger (Weston, Conn.), who finished with a 53.07.  Before the first break, Gniewek won the 50 free (21.73).

The Raiders' other first place effort came in from Hadjipateras, as he,  Casey Powers (Chappawua, N.Y.) and Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) went one-two-three in the 200 fly.  Hadjipateras won the event with a 1:58.06, while Powers and Healy posted times of 1:59.53 and 1:59.97 respectively.

Coglate received other second place efforts from Healy in the 1650 free (16:55.47), Vince Hostoffer (Highland Heights, Ohio) in the 200 free (1:46.01) and 500 free (4:47.83), Peter Coulson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the 100 back (55.70), and Tyler Coolman (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the 200 breast (2:19.26).
Gniewek, Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.), Bottger and Bennitt swam a 1:37.54 in the 200 medley relay en route to a second place performance, while the foursome of Bennitt, Pat White (New Canaan, Conn.), Hostoffer, and Hadjipateras went 3:14.80 in the 400 free relay, which finished second.

Colgate returns to action, Sunday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts.
