Bucknell Edges Colgate In Overtime, 64-62

Yaw Gyawu scored a career-high 18 points for the Raiders.

LEWISBURG, PA (1/24/09) – Darryl Shazier hit a 3-pointer from the corner to lift Bucknell to a 64-62 overtime victory over Colgate Saturday night in a Patriot League game at Sojka Pavilion.

 

Colgate falls to 6-12 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell wins its second straight game to improve to 5-14 and 2-3.

 

Bucknell was led by freshman Enoch Andoh with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while G.W. Boon tallied 15 points and grabbed four rebounds.  Freshman Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, GA) was Colgate's leading scorer with a career-high 18 points, and he grabbed five rebounds, while Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) had 11 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

 

This was a game of streaks.  Colgate opened the game taking a 19-5 lead with 11:53 remaining in the opening 20 minutes, but managed only two more points in the first half as the Bison came back for a 22-21 halftime lead.

 

In the second half, Bucknell jumped out to a four-point margin on Boon's opening 3-pointer, but Colgate came roaring back with nine straight points for a 30-25 lead.  The Raiders were able to increase their advantage to eight points, 39-31, with 11:25 remaining.

 

The Bison once again came back with 13 straight points to move in front 44-39 with eight minutes left.  Bucknell was able to maintain a lead until Gyawu put Colgate ahead 52-51 with 2:46 left on a layup.

 

Bucknell went back in front with an old-fashion 3-point play from Bryan Cohen but Colgate tied the contest on a short jumper by Woodhouse with 2:15 remaining.  Andoh scored for Bucknell with 1:52 remaining, before Colgate's Mike Venezia (Westfield, NJ) tied a game with 1:15 left.  Both teams had a couple of chances to win the game in regulation.

 

In the overtime period, Colgate led 62-58 with 1:20 left, but Bucknell came back on a 3-pointer by Cohen and Shazier game-winner from the corner with 3.4 seconds left.

 

Colgate will travel to Holy Cross on Wednesday, January 28 to close out its two-game road trip.
