American Defeats Colgate 79-49 In Men's Basketball

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/17/09) – Senior Brian Gilmore tallied a career-high 28 points, including a career-high six 3-pointers, to lead American University to a 79-49 Patriot League win over Colgate Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.

 

American extends its winning streak to six straight games while improving to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in the league, while Colgate falls to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the league.  The Raiders are 0-5 at home this season.

 

Colgate was led by freshman forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, GA), who tallied nine points, while Trevaron Vinson (Arlington, TX) added eight and Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) and Ben Jonson (Dallas, TX) chipped in six apiece.  Derrick Mercer had 14 for the Eagles and Stephen Lumpkins 10.

 

American had an outstanding shooting night finishing the contest with 65 percent making 31-of-48 field goals.  They were 9-of-16 from behind the arc (56 percent).  Colgate managed only 36 percent on 18-of-50 field goal attempts.  The Eagles out-rebounded the home team, 34-18.

 

American came out flying en route to a 15-0 lead with Gilmore accounting for 11 of those points on three 3-pointers and one two-point basket.  Colgate got into the scoring column at the 13:20 mark when Willie Morse (State College, PA) made a layup.  AU extended its lead to 20 points at halftime, 40-20.

 

In the second half the closest Colgate would come was 18 points on three occasions as the Eagles won for the ninth straight time over the Raiders.

 

Colgate returns to Patriot League play next Wednesday evening when the Raiders play host to Lehigh University at 7 p.m.
