Oakes scored her seconds career double-double in today's game against Army

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/10/09) -   Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) tallied her second career double-double, but Colgate fell, 63-51, to Army in its conference opener on Cotterell Court.  Army's Alex McGuire led all scorers with a total of 21 points.

Oakes led the Raiders with 11 points and 11 rebounds on the day.  Junior Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) added 10 points for Colgate and Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J) had eight points and grabbed five boards.  Sophomore Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) tallied five assists for Colgate.

Army started the first half with a 16-6 run, led by leading scorer Alex McGuire with nine points in the opening six minutes.  Down by 13 with just under eight minutes on the clock, the Raiders began to chip away at Army's advantage as both Green and Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) cut through the Black Knights defense to score from inside the paint.

Garman followed by knocking down two long-range shots to bring Colgate within three points, 23-20, with 2:53 remaining in the half.  Army's Erin Anthony connected on two free throws, but Green scored again with three seconds on the clock to send the Raiders into halftime down by just two, 25-23.

Colgate finished the first half with 45.5 percent (10-22) shooting from the floor, including 66.7 percent from behind the arc.  The Raiders also out-rebounded the Black Knights 18-16 in the opening session.  Army shot 31 percent (9-29) in the half and went 6-9 from the free throw line.

McGuire opened the second half with a good 3-point shot less than a minute into the session to give the Black Knights a five point lead.  The Raiders cut that advantage back down to four a few minutes later after, but Army responded by going on a 14-2 run to gain a 16 points lead with 13:03 left on the clock.  The Black Knights led by as many as 20 points before Colgate began to work their way back into the paint for points.  Kozlowski hit a jumper to cut the score to 63-51, but Army held on for the conference win.

The Raiders shot 38.8 percent (19-49) for the game and 55 percent (11-20) from the charity stripe.  The Black Knights improved on their shooting in the second half, shooting 41.7 percent (10-24) shooting from the field including 5-10 from the three-point line.  Army finished with 38.8 percent shooting (19-53) on the day.  Neither team had a greater advantage on the boards, with rebounds tied at 35.
