Schreifer caught winning touchdown pass against Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. (9/7/08) – Tight end Adrien Schreifer (Plainsboro, NJ) caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Meyers (New Orleans, LA) with no time left on the clock to lift Colgate (1-1) to a 23-19 non-conference win over Coastal Carolina (0-2) Sunday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.

Colgate down two points with eight seconds left was attempting a 33-yard field goal but a fumbled snap forced Meyers, who is a quarterback, to scramble.  He found Schriefer wide open in the end zone for the game-winning score.

Colgate’s defense had stopped Coastal on downs at the 20-yard line, forcing a punt with 1:52 left in the game.  The Raiders took over at their own 31-yard line with 1:44 left before driving the length of the field for the victory

The victory mark the 96th in Colgate head coach Dick Biddle’s career making him the winningest coach in school history.

Colgate’s Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD), returning to the lineup after missing the opener against Stony Brook, carried 43 times for 190 yards and one touchdown.

After stopping Colgate on downs at the home team’s 29-yard line, Coastal Carolina drove 63 yards before settling for a 25-yard field goal by Justin Durham for a 3-0 lead with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter.

Colgate came right back on its next possession marching to the Chanticleers’ 23-yard line where Jacob Stein (St. Petersburg, FL) kicked a 30-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to tie the contest.  It was Jacob’s third field goal of the season.

Later in the second quarter, Coastal Carolina took advantage of a Scott fumble at the Colgate 11-yard line.  Four plays later, quarterback Zach MacDowall scored on a one-yard run, but Durham missed the extra point, leaving the Chanticleers with a 9-3 lead.

In the final three minutes of the first half, Coastal put together a three-play, 64-yard drive culminated by Eric O’Neal’s five-yard run.  Durham’s extra point made it 16-3 at halftime.

Colgate turned the pigskin over three times in the opening half, on two fumbles and one interception.

After a scoreless third quarter, Coastal upped its lead to 19-3 on a 21-yard field goal by Durham capping an 11-play, 59-yard drive.

Colgate came right back with a 12-play, 63-yard drive for its first touchdown of the game.  Scott carried one yard for the score, and quarterback Greg Sullivan (Monroe, NY) ran for the two-point conversion cutting the deficit to 19-11 with 9:22 remaining.

At this point, the game was suspended because of lightning in the area.  The delay lasted one hour, 51 minutes.

After the delay, Colgate stopped Coastal on fourth down at the Raider 26, before marching 74 yards in nine plays for a touchdown.  Sullivan hit Schreifer with a six-yard strike for the score as Colgate trailed 19-17.  A two-point conversion run by Scott was stopped short of the goalline.
