ITHACA, N.Y. (11/15/08) –
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) tallied only the fourth successful penalty shot in school history as Colgate skated to a hard-fought 2-2 tie against 14
th-ranked Cornell Saturday night at Lynah Rink.
Colgate (4-3-1 overall, 1-2-1 in the ECACHL) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Big Red with the draw. Cornell is 2-0-2 overall and in the league.
The Raiders opened the scoring at 6:20 of the first period on a power-play goal by freshman
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas), assisted by
Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). It was Smith's third goal of the season.
In the second period, Colgate upped its lead to 2-0 when Day scored his penalty shot goal, beating Cornell netminder Ben Scrivens low, with 17:02 remaining for his seventh goal of the season. This was the Raiders' first successful penalty shot since current Ottawa Senator
Jesse Winchester tallied his against Rensselaer on March 3, 2007.
Midway through the third period, Colgate killed off four straight minutes of penalty time including three minutes of 5-on-3.
The Big Red kept the pressure on the Raiders and tied the game with two goals 24 seconds apart. Colin Greening finally broke through with the home team's first goal with 6:29 left, assisted by Mike Devin. Then Joe Devin scored on a 10-foot wrist shot, assisted by Blake Gallagher, to tie the contest at 13:55.
With 3:13 left in regulation, Colgate's
Nick Prockow (Montreal, Que.) was called for a five-minute major, but the Big Red couldn't get one by goalie
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), who stopped 26 of 28 shots. After the major penalty extended into the overtime period, Colgate had a two-minute power-play and several good chances to get the game-winner. Both teams had four shots on goal in the extra five-minute period.
Colgate's penalty kill returned to early season form as it stopped all 10 Cornell power play opportunities. The Raiders capitalized on one of three man advantage attempts.
Cornell's Ben Scrivens made 18 saves for the Big Red.
Colgate returns to action Friday evening as Dartmouth comes to Starr Rink. Opening face-off with the Big Green is at 7 p.m.
