HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/11/08) –
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) posted the game-winning goal late in the second period and
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) made 23 saves as Colgate downed Hockey East's UMass Lowell 2-1, Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 1,070 at Starr Rink.
“All we wanted to do was battle and win the game 30 seconds at a time,” said Colgate head coach
Don Vaughan. “I think we did that tonight. Our penalty kill was exceptional. I saw a lot of good things tonight.
“I thought
Charles Long played extremely well,” continued Vaughan. “He saw the puck well and was in great position the entire night. I'm very happy for him. He has faced some adversity during his career at Colgate in having to sit behind a three-year starter. Charles made the most out of tonight's opportunity.”
With the game knotted at 1-1, McIntyre, who posted his 50th career point with the goal, controlled the puck off a rebounded shot and beat goalie Carter Hutton for what was the game-winning score right before second period intermission at 19:47.
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) collected his first collegiate point with an assist.
Colgate, 1-0 on the year, successfully killed off a 57-second two-man advantage with around 12 minutes left in the game. Long tallied six saves in the final period, a few coming on that River Hawk two-man advantage.
After a scoreless opening period, sophomore
Wade Poplawski (Winnipeg, Man.) got Colgate on the board at 9:18 with a power play goal off a blast from out top to the top shelf behind Hutton.
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) and
Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wisc.) each posted assists on Poplawski's marker.
The River Hawks got the equalizer at 14:47 as Ryan Blair's initial shot was saved, but Patrick Cey was on the doorstep for the rebound and wristed it behind Long.
UMass Lowell outshot Colgate 24-16 and the Raiders had to kill off three power plays on the evening. Hutton saved 14 shots in net for the River Hawks.
Colgate returns to action Friday evening as it hosts Bentley at Starr Rink. Opening face-off is set 7 p.m.
