Matt Abbott joined the Colgate staff in February 2012 as a volunteer assistant coach, working primarily with the Raiders offense and midfield. He currently plays Major League Lacrosse with the Chesapeake Bayhawks.

In his first season as volunteer assistant coach at Colgate in the 2012 season, Matt helped lead the Raiders' offense to its best performance in program history, setting program records for most points (365), goals (236), and assists (129) in a season. The team had a record-breaking season, setting a program record with 14 wins en route to their second NCAA Tournament appearance and first tournament win to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The team also set a total of 29 records including 13 program records, 15 Patriot League records, and one NCAA Single-Season record. He also helped coach the first Colgate and Patriot League Tewaaraton Award winner with junior Peter Baum , who also won the Enners Award and was named the 2012 Patriot League Offensive PLayer of the Year among other accolades, as well as the 2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Ryan Walsh.
 
The brother of associate coach Mike Abbott was a four-year standout for Syracuse, helping the Orange win back-to-back national championships in 2008 and 2009. As a co-captain his senior year, Abbott was named to the USILA All-America First Team, the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team, was a USILA Scholar All-American, and a finalist for both the Tewaaraton Trophy and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
 
After a successful senior season at Syracuse, Abbott was selected ninth overall by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft. In three seasons with the Bayhawks, he has played in 23 games, recording 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points while also collecting a total of 65 groundballs. Abbott was also named to the 2009 U.S. Men's Lacrosse Training Team and was selected to play in the 2010 and 2011 MLL All-Star Games.

Abbott holds a master's degree in finance and a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting both from Syracuse University. He completed his first degree in 2009 and his second in May 2010. He is also currently an investment advisor at Armory Capital Management in Syracuse, N.Y.

Matt's brother, Mike, serves as Colgate's associate head coach. And Matt’s father, Tom, is one of the top Division I lacrosse referees. Tom Abbott was named in July 2015 the NCAA's national coordinator for men's lacrosse officiating.
