Nate Scales joined the Colgate men’s and women’s cross country and track & field staff in August 2017 as an assistant coach.

Scales works with the sprinters in the program, developing workout plans for sprinters from the 400 Meter Dash down to the 60 Meter Dash.

In just his first year at the helm, Scales coached Lauren Henske, who had her top performance of the year at just the right time when she set a personal recrod in the 400-Meter Race at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. At the 2018 Patriot League Outdoor Championships, Warren Carter came through and earned the Raiders four team points with his high finish in the 110-meter hurdles.

The 2018-19 campaign was a banner year for Raider sprinters under the guidance of Scales. During the indoor season, Oliver Moe became the first Colgate sprinter to finish on the podium since 2012 at the Patriot League Championships when he came in third in the 500 Meter Dash. Then in the outdoor season, Warren Carter rewrote history in the 110 Meter Hurdles when he broke the school record in the event. Both men qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Championships throughout the course of the season.

Scales worked as a graduate assistant coach for the past two seasons at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. Among his duties, Scales oversaw and wrote the workout plans for the men’s and women’s short sprints program with three athletes earning All-Region honors. He coached the women’s 4x100 Team to a new school record time and guided several athletes to new personal records.

Prior to Heidelberg, Scales coached a short stint at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School, where he guided the 4x200 and 4x400 Meter Relay Teams to the State Championship for the first time in program history in addition to breaking the school records. He also coached the school record holder in the 100 Meter Dash. Two athletes during Scales’ short time are currently competing in college on scholarship.

As a student-athlete and senior captain on Kent State University track and field team, Scales was an eight-time all-conference selection and a member of the 2011 4x100 Meter Relay conference championship team. He set personal bests in the 100 Meter Dash (10.51 seconds), 200 Meter Dash (21.63 seconds) and 60 Meter Dash (6.79 seconds), the seventh fastest 60 Meter Dash time in school history. In addition to his accolades, Scales was a member of the 4x100 Meter Relay team to run in 40.30 seconds, qualifying for the first round of the NCAA National Meet.

Scales graduated from Kent State in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in organization communication. He is currently pursuing his master of arts in education from Heidelberg.
