During his first two seasons at Colgate coach Peterson was part of the best Patriot League finish ever by a Colgate track & field team. The athlete’s coach Peterson has worked with have broken more than 20 school records and achieved greater then 40 all-time top-10 performances. In addition to these two seasons the program has received the Patriot League Coach of the Year Award, the Patriot League Athlete of the Year Award (Knox), Cross Country Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year (DeRoo), Outdoor T&F Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year (DeRoo), and Colgate University’s Female Athlete of the Year Award (DeRoo). The Raiders have won 12 individual Patriot League titles with more then 20 girls earning all-Patriot League honors.
Curry Knox ’09 who left her mark on Colgate’s program (six school records) continued her success under coach Peterson’s guidance. Knox capped off her career with four individual Patriot League titles, 100H, 60H, 100m, 60m and a relay title with the 4x100 in her senior campaign. Her performance in the 100m dash will go down in history as the fastest woman to ever run in the Patriot League running 11.70.
Peterson is a graduate of the University of Iowa ’04 and a member of the track and field program where he finished his career on the Iowa All-Time list in six different events. He earned six all-Big Ten honors, a Big Ten title in the 4x100 and all-Midwest Region honor. Peterson qualified in all eight seasons for the NCAA DI National Championships while competing in five, placing as high as ninth in the 4x400 relay.
Coach Peterson started his college coaching at Augustana College, in South Dakota while working towards his master’s degree in Education. During that time Augie cross-country and track and field teams established themselves as a power not only on the NCC but also in DII.
In addition to his collegiate career, he made three appearances at the USATF National Championships including one Olympic Trials (2004). After graduation, he competed for Competitive Edge Athletics running in the special invite 400 high hurdles at the 2004 and 2005 Drake Relays.
