Ganiyat Adeduntan (pronounced GAH-nee-OTT ah-deh-DUN-tin) has established a winning culture that continues to bring the program to new heights since arriving as the ninth women’s basketball head coach in its Division I program history in April 2021.
Adeduntan, who signed a contract extension through 2029, led Colgate to historic success in her third season at the helm in 2023-24. The Raiders finished 20-14 overall and 10-8 in Patriot League play, capturing their first 20-win season since 2003-04. Colgate finished second in the Patriot League standings – its highest finish in more than two decades – and advanced to the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2013.
The Raiders under Adeduntan once again deployed one of the top defensive units in the country, ranking No. 1 in three-point field goal defense (.243) and 15th in scoring defense (55.7). Colgate set program records for most assists in a season (485) and best free throw percentage (74.7).
Among notable highlights during the 2023-24 campaign included the program’s largest margin of victory when the Raiders topped Boston University by 37 points, 77-40, on March 6, and the program’s first-ever win over a Big East opponent when they knocked off Providence, 54-41, in the second round of the WNIT. With that win over the Friars, Colgate became the first team in Patriot League history to advance to the Super Sixteen of the WNIT.
In August 2023, she was rewarded with a contract extension through 2027-28 after orchestrating one of the greatest single-season improvements in program history. Colgate increased its win total by 10 games in 2022-23, finishing 16-14 overall and 10-8 in Patriot League play to secure the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League tournament. The only Colgate women's basketball team to have a better single-season turnaround was the 2003-04 championship squad that finished 21-10.
Colgate in 2022-23 finished over .500 against Patriot League opponents for the third time since 2000. The Raiders capped the regular season on a four-game winning streak, highlighted by a 14-point win over Loyola in the finale, to go with regular-season sweeps of Lehigh and Navy.
One of the greatest factors contributing to the 2022-23 success was Adeduntan's defense, which ranked ninth nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense (25.6) and 12th in scoring defense (54.6) – good enough to lead the Patriot League in both categories.
Colgate saw improvements in nearly every statistical category in 2022-23, including scoring margin, rebounding, turnover margin, assist-turnover ratio, field goal percentage, and free throw percentage. The Raiders ranked 24th nationally in turnovers per game (12.8).
Adeduntan has developed three All-Patriot League honorees and an All-Rookie selection during her time in Hamilton. Colgate has also been well represented with academic honors, placing more than ten student-athletes on the Patriot League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll each season.
Adeduntan arrived after three seasons as the top assistant coach and four seasons overall on the staff of Jennifer Rizzotti at George Washington. She helped the Colonials win an Atlantic-10 Conference championship and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator.
In the summer of 2020, the Athens, Georgia, native was named a top-50 Impactful Mid Major Assistant by Silver Waves, and was invited to attend the prestigious TopConnect Virtual Seminar.
Recruiting Success
While at George Washington, Adeduntan was instrumental in the recruitment of two former top-100 recruits from ACC schools in Ariel Stephenson (#42, Wake Forest) and Sydney Zambrotta (#56, Louisville) to continue their careers with the Colonials.
She worked directly with the development of guards and wings. Under her guidance, GW produced all-conference guards in Mei-Lyn Bautista and Brianna Cummings. Adeduntan also assisted with scouting of opponents, community service initiatives, housing, compliance and overseeing student-athletes' academic progress.

Championship Season
Adeduntan helped engineer a championship season in her first season on the bench as the Colonials won the Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the first round of the NCAA tournament. Her scouting throughout the season led to a number of wins, including a key road regular-season victory at Saint Joseph's and the championship victory over the Hawks a few weeks later.
She went to George Washington after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Northeastern. Adeduntan helped engineer an 11-win turnaround from her first season on the staff to the second season as the Huskies improved from four wins in 2014-15 to 15 wins in 2015-16.
Prior to her time at Northeastern, Adeduntan served as the head coach for two seasons (2012-14) at Wheelock in the Division III ranks in Boston. There, she led the Wildcats to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. She also had career stops at Northeastern (Administrative Assistant, 2010-12); Essence Girls Basketball AAU (2007-10); North Florida Christian School for her first head coaching role (2008-10); and Florida State University School (2006-08), where she helped guide the Seminoles to the Class 3A State Championship in 2007.
Florida State 1,000-Point Scorer
Before coaching, Adeduntan enjoyed a stellar playing career both at the prep and collegiate level. She was a four-year letterwinner and 1,000-point scorer at Florida State under head coach Sue Semrau. She earned placement on the ACC All-Freshman Team, was a four-year member of the ACC All-Academic Team and earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors as a junior in 2005. She also was a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honoree in 2005.
Adeduntan was one of the top players in the nation coming out of high school and a McDonald's All-American finalist, as well as the Georgia Gatorade and Northeast Georgia Player of the Year.
She earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) from Florida State, as well as her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Northeastern.
