Catherine Hanson is in her third season working with the men's cross country and track and field programs, and her first season as a full-time assistant coach. Previously a part-time assistant, Hanson assists with recruiting and administrative responsibilities, as well as with coaching all student-athletes in the program.
Hanson began coaching the Raiders during the 2002-03 season as a volunteer coach. She worked with the cross country team that finished second at the IC4A Championship, the 4x400 relay team that won the Patriot League Championship at the 2003 outdoor meet, and the indoor distance medley relay team that set a school record. Last season, she worked as a part-time assistant, and continued to work with Colgate's runners.
As an undergraduate, Hanson competed for Mount St. Mary's as a distance runner. She competed at the Penn Relays in the 5,000-meter run. During her senior season, she was a member of the cross country team that won the conference championship, and she earned Academic All-America honors.
In 1997, Hanson started to compete in duathlons and triathlons. In 2003, she competed at the U.S. Triathlon National Championship in Shreveport, La., where she was ranked 38th among U.S. female triathletes. Hanson has finished first among women at several road races during the past year, including Hamilton's Lake Moraine Run. Over the summer, she competed in the Boilermaker Road Race in Utica and improved her time by more than two minutes from last year.
Hanson earned a bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Mary's College, and is currently working toward a master's degree from George Mason University. She is married to Hans Hanson, and the couple has three children: Michael, 10, Matthew, 4, and Samuel, one month.
