Matt Hanig was named the Colgate assistant men's rowing coach in August 2006.
Hanig came to Colgate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he was an assistant coach with the men’s rowing program in 2005-06.
During the season, Hanig guided the Minutemen to a third-place finish at the New England Rowing Championships. The first and second varsity boats finished fifth in their respective races, and the third varsity claimed third to accrue the team’s bronze-medal points.
A 2006 graduate of UMass, Hanig earned a degree in animal science with a concentration in biotechnology. He was a three-year varsity oarsman at UMass where he was elected president of the club as both a junior and a senior and helped to win the 2002 New England Championship.
From 2003-05 Hanig was the president of the UMass Men’s Crew Club RSO. His responsibilities included assuming and delegating management to a five-member executive board and facilitated fundraising efforts.
Hanig also worked at the Northeast Rowing Center from 2004-05, where he supervised student-athletes at the camps and acted as the launch driver for master coaches from the Eastern Sprint schools.
Four-year letterwinner of the Spackenhill High School rowing team, Hanig was team captain his junior and senior years. He was also honored with being named a three-time MHAL Academic All-Star and a Poughkeepsie Journal All-Star.
Hanig brings 13 years of sailing experience. He currently is a member of Team Whacko Racing based in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
