Colgate University Athletics

Athletic Medical Billing Policies and Procedures

Colgate University has an insurance policy in place to assist student-athletes with medical bills associated with injuries and illnesses which are the direct result of official intercollegiate athletic activity.  This policy has a $1000.00 deductible and student-athletes and their primary insurance company are responsible for all bills for the first $1000.00 for each and every incident.  This deductible is reset for each incident.  After the $1000.00 deductible has been met, Colgate Sports Medicine will submit a claim in an attempt to assist with the remaining balances.

Key Points
  • Students must have health insurance to be enrolled at Colgate University
  • When selecting a plan, student-athletes and their families should select plans that will cover them in while at Colgate University and realize that the $1000.00 deductible exists for our plan to be able to contribute.
  • Official Athletic Activity includes:  competitions, practices, coach-supervised conditioning, and official weight training sessions.
  • You must report all injuries associated with athletic activity to Colgate Sports Medicine during their time as an athlete to ensure proper care and documentation.
  • Our insurance policy does have a "reasonable and customary" limit to their coverage.  This means that if they deem the medical service exceeded the accepted reasonable and customary rates in the industry, they may only pay up to the accepted limit.  This would leave a balance for which the student would be responsible.
  • All medical bills must be submitted to your primary insurance company first.
  • Colgate Sports Medicine will obtain, with the student's assistance, bills and EOBs (explanation of benefits) for submission to our insurance company for proper payment.
  • There are some exclusions to this insurance policy:  second opinions, contact lenses, orthotics, and other items will not be covered.
  • The excess insurance policy has a two-year pay period. Bills generated more than two years after the date of injury will not be considered.
  • This excess insurance policy is the limit of Colgate University's responsibility for any and all athletic medical costs.
  • Most importantly:  if you have any questions regarding what is covered or whether there is assistance, just ask.  Please contact:  Leslie Cowen, Director of Sports Medicine, 315-228-6399, lcowen@colgate.edu
