HAMILTON — Lydia Thornton broke free in the 88th minute and slotted the game-winning goal inside the far post to give the Colgate women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over American on Saturday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Thornton's goal was her third of the season and second game-winner. After American's goal kick was redirected back toward Colgate's attacking third, Ana Schremp drifted a through ball to Thornton streaking down the right side. She beat her defender and drilled the game-winner inside the far post with 2:35 left in regulation.
Thornton also had a hand in Colgate's first goal – a one-timer from Ellie Stokes that broke a scoreless tie less than a minute into the second half. Thornton from the top of the box centered a pass to Stokes, who struck a low shot past the outstretched arms of the American keeper to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Despite dominating possession, outshooting American 14-4 in the final frame, American found the equalizer on a goal by Morissa Lambert in the 70th minute.
Colgate responded with consistent pressure, securing six corner kicks and peppering six shots on frame in the second half. The Raiders finished with a 22-4 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 advantage on target, but none were larger than the final strike of the night off the boot of Thornton.
