PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — Colgate men's rowing wrapped up racing at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday, highlighted by the varsity eight earning a bronze medal in its grand final race.
All three of Colgate's other boats also raced in grand final events.
It is the second year in a row that the Raiders' top boat has medaled at the event after finishing second last year.
The 1v8 crossed the finish line in 5:46.458, five seconds behind gold medalist Drexel and three seconds behind second-place La Salle. Colgate defeated boats from Temple, Saint Joseph's, and Jacksonville.
In the men's single final,
Harrison Zeigler notched a sixth-place result, trailing the next boat from High Point by just three seconds. He recorded a time of 7:36.199.
The freshman four boat finished less than a second short of a bronze medal after logging a time of 7:00.591 as Bowdoin narrowly outlasted the Raiders. The crew placed ahead of Lafayette and Marietta.
Colgate's JV eight boat registered a sixth-place finish with a time of 6:11.210. It came in 11 seconds behind the next boat from Saint Joseph's.
DAY 1 RECAP
The team opened the competition Friday with heat and semifinal races.
First up was the men's single heat race. Zeigler placed fifth, logging a time of 17:17.272, and he beat out boats from Pittsburgh, Rollins, and Bowdoin by five seconds or less. Zeiger then advanced to the semifinals, where he notched a second-place finish, coming in four seconds behind the winning boat.
The freshman four boat also recorded a fifth-place heat result with a time of 06:40.951. Colgate won its semifinal race after posting a time of 7:00.607, edging out the next boat by less than a second.
In the JV eight race, the Raiders' boat crossed the finish line in 5:46.927, good for fifth place. Colgate came within two seconds of the next two crews from La Salle and Saint Joseph's. In the semifinals, the Raiders got revenge on St. Joseph's, defeating the Hawks by two seconds with a time of 6:04.055 which was also just two seconds behind the winning boat from Villanova.
The first day concluded with the varsity eight taking second in its heat after registering a time of 5:27.086. Colgate's boat came in less than a second ahead of the third-place boat from La Salle and two seconds behind the winning one from Drexel. The Raiders then won their semifinal race, logging a time of 5:48.152. They defeated second-place Temple by five seconds and the other remaining boats by over 20 seconds.
