OAK RIDGE, Tenn.— Colgate men's rowing varsity eight boat captured first place at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta Sunday.
It is the second-straight year that head coach
Khaled Sanad's squad has won the SIRA title. The victory also earned the Raiders an automatic qualifying bid to the IRA National Championship Regatta in June.
Colgate raced in the grand final Sunday, logging a time of 6:05.092 to take the gold. The Raiders won the race by nine seconds, finishing ahead of Jacksonville, followed by FIT, Virginia, Notre Dame, and Stetson.
On Saturday, Colgate opened the racing with a pair of first-place finishes, winning its time trial and semifinal race.
The Raiders began Saturday's racing by taking first place out of 22 boats in the time trial. Colgate posted a time of 5:16.308, which was eight seconds faster than the second-place boat from Jacksonville. The boat also beat crews from Virginia, Notre Dame, and FIT.
Colgate then advanced to the semifinals, where it logged a winning time of 6:14.685. The crew defeated the next boat from FIT by five seconds. Other teams that competed in the semifinal race were Delaware, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and Texas A&M.
