Football Celebrates Class of 2023 at End of Season Banquet

Colgate football celebrated the team's 24 seniors at their annual banquet

HAMILTON – Colgate football hosted its annual end-of-season banquet on Saturday, Feb. 4. Student-athletes, families, coaches, and support staff celebrated the 24 seniors graduating and the end of the 2022 season.

Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach Stan Dakosty recognized the team's captains, senior linebacker J.C. Gaughan and sophomore quarterback Michael Brescia for their leadership on and off the field throughout the season.

Dakosty also recognized senior wide receiver Garrett Oakey for cracking the Colgate football top-10 in receiving yards (1,923) and receptions (142), coming in at seventh place in both to end his Colgate career.

The awards started with honoring Jim Gregory '76, who could not be in attendance but won the Maroon Council Jack Mitchell Loyola Award.

Sophomore punter Shelby Pruett was given the Mark Rakowski '83 Special Teams Award. Pruett garnered the title of All-Patriot League First Team Punter after putting 58 times for 2,434 yards during the season.

Brescia won the Andy Kerr Offensive MVP Award for his stellar second-year campaign. The Hinsdale, Ill., native led the team in rushing and passing touchdowns and yards, scoring a combined total of 20 touchdowns for 2,407 yards. The sophomore also hit the 1,000 rushing yard milestone during the Raiders' home win over Georgetown.

Senior linebacker Tyler Flick earned the Hal W. Lahar Defensive MVP Award after leading the defense with a career-high 93 tackles during the season. Flick landed on the All-League Second Team and the Academic All-Patriot Team for his performance on and off the field in 2022.

Arthur Hamlin was this year's Dick Biddle Coaches Award winner. Hamlin was presented with the prestigious honor for his heroic return to the gridiron after fighting and beating Hodgkin's Lymphoma during the 2021 season.

The awards wrapped up with the Gordon Watson '62 Scout Team Awards and the Debbie Rhyde Raider Award. Freshman Max Walters received the Offensive Scout Team Award, while sophomore Mack Marrone received the Defense Scout Team Award. Senior Tucker Dunn won the last award of the banquet, the Debbie Rhyde Raider Award, which is given to the Raider who best represents the core values of Colgate football: community, family, selflessness, and commitment to the program, both on and off the field.
