Colgate Drops Final Regular Season Meet

The Raider won 10 events on the road to wrap up the regular season

WORCESTER, Mass. – Colgate swimming and diving wrapped up the regular season with a loss on the road to Holy Cross.
 
The Raiders won 10 events in the dual meet, including three relay wins.
 
The men's team opened the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshmen Jack Lira, Ryan Jee, Matt Freund and sophomore Peyton Wray came in at 1:37.01 to grab first place. For the women, Mackenzie Ferguson, Brooke Garretson, Regan Hau, and Jordan Hurt were a few seconds shy of first place, finishing the race in second place at 1:51.06.
 
Wray and Nora Bergstrom kicked off the individual events with a second-place finish apiece in the 1,000-yard freestyle with times of 10:13.20 and 10:45.91.
 
Freshman Danielle McNerney won the first individual meet for Colgate during the 200-yard freestyle. McNerney stole first at 1:59.23, with fellow Raider Elizabeth Rainey close behind in third with a final time of 2:00.01. Lira came in third for the men as well at 1:46.39.
 
The Raiders were close to first place in the 100-yard backstroke as Garretson and Matthew Szypula placed second at 1:00.84 and 55.03 seconds. Ferguson rounded out the top three finishes in third place with 1:01.11. Colgate continued finishing in the top three as Jee and Audrey Collins placed second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke at 59.01 seconds and 1:08.62.
 
Colgate swept the 200-yard butterfly, with Freund and Addisyn Donfris grabbing first with times of 1:55.82 and 2:11.44. Sophomore Emma Senglaub was near Donfris in third place at 2:15.44.
 
Lira went on to place second in the 50-yard freestyle, just a couple of seconds behind first place with 22.73 seconds. Hurt and Cooper Luedde both placed third for Colgate in the event with final times of 25.66 and 22.82 seconds.
 
Colgate then dominated the 100-yard freestyle as Garretson and Luedde snatched first place at 54.92 and 48.87 seconds. Rainey, McNerney, and Emmet Santry were behind the winners in second and third place. Rainey placed second with 55.24 seconds, with McNerney and Santry following in third at 56.00 and 49.73 seconds.
 
Shortly after, the women's squad grabbed second and third place in the 200-yard backstroke as Ferguson and Maggie DeLillo finished one after another at 2:13.51 and 2:15.53. In the next event, the men went on to take second and third place in the 500-yard freestyle as Freund and Wray came in at 5:00.83 and 5:01.83. Bergstrom found herself in second place for the women in the 500, three seconds shy of first with 5:18.18.
 
Jee then won the 100-yard butterfly with a final time of 51.85 seconds, two seconds faster than the nearest Crusader. Hurt placed second for the women at 1:0.25.
 
First year Collins won the last Raider individual event during the 400-yard IM coming in at 4:35.77, almost nine seconds faster than the closest swimmer. Elke Ambach and Andrew Mazzacano both placed third for Colgate at 4:50.74 and 4:30.03.
 
Colgate ended the meet with a 400-yard freestyle relay sweep. Rainey, Garretson, McNerney, and Hurt placed first for the women at 3:40.81, while Freund, Lira, Luedde, and Jee grabbed first for the men at 3:14.45.
 
Freshman Mazzacano highlighted the Raider divers in the meet, placing third in his debut on the board. Mazzacano finished the one-meter with a final score of 102.30. For the women divers, Ella Olafsson, Kate Hoover, and Ava Hammer placed fourth, sixth, and eighth in the one-meter, with scores of 214.73, 201.00, and 156.60. Olafsson and Hoover went on to grab fourth and sixth again in the three-meter with final scores of 201.00 and 169.35.

The Raiders have almost a month off before heading to the Patriot League Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Lewisburg, Pa.
