Raiders Wrap Up WVU Invitational

Freshmen Highlight Final Day

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Colgate Swimming and diving completed the West Virginia Invitational on Saturday evening. The men's team finished in seventh place with 420 points, and the women finished in eighth place with 497 points.
 
Freshmen squad members, once again, highlighted the team, as Audrey Collins, Matt Freund, Ryan Jee, Jack Lira, and Matthew Szypula broke freshman records.
 
Collins crushed the 200-yard butterfly program freshman record with 2:00.07. Collins, for the third straight day, placed in the top five, grabbing third place to go along with her record-breaking time.
 
Jee set the bar high in the 200-yard breaststroke, breaking the freshman and team record with 2:05.19. Jee placed 18th in the event due to his phenomenal performance.
 
Once again, the men's Fab Four of Freund, Lira, and Szypula smashed a freshman program record, this time in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet placed 11th with their record-breaking time of 3:06.63.
 
First-year Brooke Garretson found herself in ninth place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.32. Fellow Raider Elke Ambach came in at 2:11.05 to cap off the event at the invitational. Both posted personal bests in the event. Szypula found himself in 18th place for the men's side with a time of 1:52.49.
 
The personal bests just kept coming in during the 100-yard freestyle, as Garretson finished with 51.27 seconds. For the men, Lira and Cooper Luedde grabbed 19th and 20th place, with times of 46.20 seconds and 46.28 seconds.
 
Andrew Mazzacano also swam a personal best in the 200-yard breaststroke coming in at 2:10.00.
 
Peyton Wray highlighted long-distance swimming for Colgate, placing 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with 16:28.60. For the women, Dana Witte placed 17th with 17:40.17. Katie Senglaub, Alexis Burton, and Nicole Ben-David were not far behind Witte, placing 19th, 20th, and 21st with 17:58.09, 18:03.60, and 18:04.66.
 
Zoe Stokes and Emma Senglaub found themselves in 17th and 18th place in the 200-yard butterfly, coming in at 2:06.62 and 2:06.76. For the men's squad, Freund and Morgan Cecil set records in 13th and 26th place with times of 1:51.83 and 1:56.54.
 
Finishing off the West Virginia Invitational was the record-breaking Fab Four in the 400-yard freestyle. Along with the recording-breaking quartet, Garretson, Jordan Hurt, Alexandra Mehos, and Stokes placed 12th with 3:30.41.
 
UP NEXT
The Raiders get a little break, not hitting the pool again till Saturday, Dec. 10, for a dual meet with Hamilton College. The Continentals come to Lineberry Natatorium for the only December meet for Colgate with a start time of 11 a.m.
