NEW HAVEN – Colgate scored on its first two shots of the second half to break a scoreless tie and defeat Yale 2-0 on a rain soaked field in New Haven.
Following a sluggish first half in which neither team could mount any sustained offense the Raiders came out aggressively in the second stanza. The first goal came in the 52
nd minute as
Ally Giovino took a long pass from
Merritt Smith and outraced two Eli defenders to the front of the net. Giovino's high shot deflected off the hands of the Yale goalkeeper and dropped just under the crossbar. The goal was Giovino's third of the season.
Four minutes later
Hannah Pinkus, last week's Patriot League Midfielder of the Week, knocked in a header off a corner kick from
Ruby Diodati. Diodati's corner was first headed by Adrienne Vaughan and Pinkus headed the ball into the right side of the Yale net to finish the scoring for the day.
Raider goalkeeper
Emma Hickey posted her second shutout of the season in four games played.
Colgate improved its record to 3-2 with the win.
