Pinkus, Poncsak Lead Raiders to Shutout Victory

Colgate Blanks Boston U 1-0 in Patriot League Tournament Semifinal Rematch

BOSTON – A redirected header in the second half by Hannah Pinkus lifted the Colgate women's soccer team past Boston University 1-0 on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

Wednesday's match followed a similar script as the 2021 spring Patriot League Tournament semifinal. Neither team found the back of the net in the first half despite Colgate holding a 7-2 advantage in shots.

The Raiders changed that script in the second half when Ruby Diodati earned a free kick from just outside of the box. The senior defender served a soft shot into traffic, where Pinkus connected on a header and sent it high into the netting for the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute.

Colgate (5-4-0, 1-1-0 PL) kept forcing the issue and outshot Boston U (4-5-1, 1-1-1 PL) 8-4 in the second half. Nicole Apuzzi came away with another scoring chance in the 75th minute, but the Terriers' keeper Gretchen Bennett made a strong save diving to her right.

Grace Poncsak registered two saves in the second half, with her last stop coming in the 62nd minute to preserve the shutout. The Raiders outshot the Terriers 15-7 in the match.

Adrienne Vaughn and Pinkus led the Raiders with four shots apiece. Vaughn, Pinkus and Ally Giovino each finished with three shots on target. Poncsak's three saves led to her second clean sheet of the season.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

"I finally feel as though we put together a full performance tonight. Both sides of the ball we competed hard and executed for 90 minutes. We bent but didn't break and kept the pressure on all the way through. Tough swing with Loyola and BU back-to-back on the road so I'm proud of the group for really battling tonight and coming away with a well-earned result. We're definitely happy to be coming back to Beyer-Small on Saturday to compete with a tough Bucknell side. Winning in the Patriot League is hard, especially on the road, so we'll enjoy this one for the ride home and then begin preparing for the next one."

UP NEXT
Colgate has finally wrapped up a rugged stretch of six-of-seven on the road and returns for back-to-back home games against Bucknell and Navy. It starts with a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Bison on Saturday as part of a homecoming weekend doubleheader at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
