Raiders Sweep Marietta in Eights, Fours

Colgate Names Clark Co-Captain for Remainder of Spring; Clark, Feeney Captains for 2021-22

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Colgate posted an impressive pair of wins Sunday against Dad Vail Regatta rival Marietta at the West Side Rowing Club. The event was cohosted by Canisius.

The Raiders covered the 2,000-meter course in the Varsity 8+ in 6:45.3 against a head current and a moderate headwind chop, particularly over the second 1,000 meters. Marietta had two boats in the water for both races.

In the fours, Colgate also came out on top with a winning time of 7:58.4.

Prerace vs. Marietta

The races went a lot better than two weeks ago for a few reasons," senior Connor Appleyard said. "it was really good for a lot of guys to get their first collegiate race under their belts and understand what it takes to win.  We worked hard over the past two weeks to row better together and improve upon our focus and the level of maturity that we need when we're on the water.

"The team is starting to come together a lot more and also unite around the expectations of being a top team. This requires us to not only train hard but also focus on little things we can do better with nutrition and recovery.

Appleyard believes the team is much more united around the expectations of winning, which means not only training harder but also flowing together in the boat.

"Through this attention to detain, we were able to have a successful race," he said. "We are excited to see what we can do in the next few weeks."

Colgate takes on Ithaca and Marietta this Saturday in Ithaca, and then races at home against Marist on May 1.

In other news, the team voted junior Colin Clark a team captain alongside Tali Filstein for the remainder of the spring season. Clark and junior Tom Feeney are taking over as captains for 2021-22.

"It's a great honor to be selected by my teammates as a captain," Clark said. "Rowing is truly a team sport, and our wins today in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 speak to our shared commitment to work together as a team.

"To be named as a captain by such a fantastic group of people means a great deal to me, and I hope to represent them well in this role."
