Colgate Closes Out Non-Conference Play with Tough Loss to Harvard

McMahon and Golembiewski lead the Raiders with career-high 16 and 14 points, respectively

HAMILTON, N.Y. Colgate could not overcome Harvard's blistering three-point shooting and fell to the Crimson 93-53 at Cotterell Court Tuesday afternoon. Harvard's Harmoni Turner scored 19 points to lead the team. Morgan McMahon led Colgate with a career-high 16 points, going four for five from behind the arc.

Harvard came out strong, sinking four of six from three-point distance and shooting over 57% in the first quarter. Tiasia McMillan scored Colgate's first points from the foul line and followed up with a second-chance layup off her offensive rebound. Morgan McMahon scored next for the Raiders and then Morgan Frank grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to earn two more in the paint. Towards the end of the first quarter, Sophia Diehl made one of two free throws and ended the quarter with a three-point jumper. Colgate trailed 28-11 after the first ten minutes.

Colgate opened the second quarter with McMillan and Taylor Golembiewski putting the first four points on the scoreboard. With Colgate causing three defensive stops, Harvard called a time-out. Colgate came out of the timeout with Jenna Paul putting in two free throws. Harvard went on an 18-0 run before McMahon sank a three-point basket. In the last minute of the second quarter, Golembiewski made a three-point play off a jumper and the free throw. At the buzzer, McMahon sank her second three-point basket to end the half with Colgate down 53-26.

McMillan started Colgate's scoring effort in the third quarter with a layup, and on the next trip down the hardwood was fouled and made the first of two free throws. McMahon netted her third three of the game. Golembiewski added two more baskets along with a deuce from McMillan to get the score within 22 points but Harvard would pull away after that. Golembiewski added a three and Frank added a driving layup to end the third quarter with the Crimson leading by 32.

In Holly Lueken's first action since returning from an injury last year, the junior made one of two free throws to score her first point of the season. McMahon continued her hot streak from beyond the arc, making her career high fourth three-point shot. Colgate continued to battle with Golembiewski netting two additional points in the paint for a career high of 14 points. Jenna Paul put in her second of two shots from the stripe and McMillan followed suit her next time at the line. McMahon closed out Colgate's scoring with her two free throws to tally her highest scoring performance of her collegiate career. With Alexa Brodie out for most of the game and Taylor Golembiewski on the bench due to foul trouble late in the game, the Raiders were not able to close the gap in the fourth quarter.

Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan

"We knew coming in that Harvard was well coached and a very talented scoring team. We had stretches where we competed with them but their offensive weapons were a challenge for us. They pushed us and kept us from getting in our flow which resulted in turnovers they were able to capitalize on and score. We will regroup and take a few days to spend time with our families over the holiday and be back at it and ready to keep building upon each game to take on Lafayette next week."

UP NEXT
The Raiders return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 29, hosting Lafayette at 2 p.m. at Cotterell Court for the first Patriot League game of the season.
