Women’s Basketball Opener at Cornell Postponed

Due to an ongoing safety concern on Cornell’s campus

ITHACA, N.Y. — Tonight's season opening game between Colgate and Cornell will not take place tonight as scheduled due to an ongoing safety concern on Cornell's campus. The two schools will work to reschedule for a later date this season if possible.

This evening, Cornell University issued an alert indicating that local law enforcement was continuing a search for a gunman traveling on foot north of the Ithaca campus. A shelter in place order was issued for individuals within a one-mile radius of the last known location of the gunman, including some buildings on the Cornell campus.

Although events and activities on some parts of campus were not canceled, all events and activities scheduled for North Campus this evening were canceled. The Colgate women's basketball team had not yet reached campus when it learned of this development, so Colgate administrators asked them to pull over and pause their travel until more direct information or official updates could be ascertained indicating that it would be safe to allow the team to continue.

During that time, Colgate Athletics administrators consulted with colleagues in Colgate's Office of Campus Safety, Emergency Management, and Environmental Health and Safety, while also communicating with counterparts at Cornell. However, Colgate was unable to get an "all clear," or information to confirm the situation was stabilized and safe. As such, Colgate administrators made the decision to return the team to Hamilton immediately.

Colgate's season opener will now take place at Cotterell Court this Saturday when the Raiders host UMBC at 2 p.m.
