Strong Showing for Colgate at Princeton Chase

V8 places 10th in stacked field

COMPLETE RESULTS

PRINCETON, N.J.
– The Colgate men's rowing team closed out the fall portion of its season with a strong showing on Sunday at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie.

Colgate raced in the event for the first time in 18 years and had several strong races in a field that included several top Ivy League and Eastern Sprints schools. Colgate entered six boats, which competed in five events during Sunday's regatta.

The first race down the three-mile course was the men's heavyweight 8 and Colgate placed 10th of 40 crews. The Raiders' time of 13:06.589 was forty seconds off of the winning pace from Princeton's top entry and finished ahead of Penn's A and B boats, and Wisconsin, Yale, and Navy's B entries. Colgate was less than a second off of the pace of Drexel and eight seconds ahead of Marist, two schools that Colgate will see during the spring racing schedule.

"The result in the 8+ makes us feel a lot better about the mishap at Head of the Charles and gives us a true sense of our speed and depth," said Colgate assistant coach A.C. Chacon. Grouped with the HOCR Collegiate and Lightweight 4+ results, we believe we have the depth we need for a great spring. Winter training will mix things up as we will find additional speed. Covid meant that a lot of our first years did not have a lot of indoor erg training the last few winter seasons. Where they are now and where they could be in terms of fitness is one of those unknowns that not just Colgate, but all of collegiate  rowing, will be paying attention to over the next five months."

The Raiders had two entries in the coxed four. Colgate A completed the course in a time of 15:40.009 to finished 23rd and Colgate B's time of 16:10.545 placed 27th in the 30-boat field. Colgate's final race of the afternoon was the pair, a race in which Colgate rowed against six Princeton crews. The Raiders ran the course in 17:11.465 to place sixth.

Colgate entered two sculling events with crews competing in a quad and a double. The quad placed second in a field of four boats. Colgate's time of 13:57.998 was 13 seconds off Princeton's lightweight quad and finished ahead of two lightweight quads from Cornell. In the double scull event, the Raiders finished fifth in a seven-boat field. Colgate's 16:07.885 placed behind three Princeton crews and ahead of Marietta's A entry.

"The fours and small boat lineups in Round 2 in the afternoon dispersed the 8+ from the morning into various lineups," noted Chacon. "For a second race of the day we held onto the morning speed quite well. We have not raced a quad in the last several years but still did very well. When we saw the race results come in with Colgate on top we were a little bit shocked but also a little perplexed at the times listed. Once it was realized that the times were mistaken, which flipped us down to second, we were not discouraged because it was such a great race. The group is very talented."

"All of our lineups had some type of success or improvement, which is what we look for from race to race," added Chacon. "Either by expanding a margin over another crew or comparing ourselves indirectly to crews we have not raced but other teams have, we can get a sense of where we are at and where we could be in the Spring racing season."

From Head Coach Khaled Sanad
"The hard work all season long by our student-athletes paid off with this strong showing. I am very pleased with the performance over the weekend and am looking forward to winter training and hopefully a historic season."
