BALTIMORE – Double-doubles by
Alli Lowe and
Julia Kurowski were not enough to slow Loyola's offensive attack in a 3-1 decision in the regular season finale Saturday at Reitz Arena.
Lowe tallied 13 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double in her last seven matches. Kurowski racked up 24 assists to go with 10 digs, while
Sophie Thompson posted a team-leading four blocks.
The Raiders (16-9, 13-3 PL) took the first set but Loyola (17-10, 9-7 PL) answered with three straight wins to complete the comeback.
Colgate now turns its attention to the Patriot League tournament, which the regular season champion and top-seeded Raiders host next weekend.
Set 1: Colgate 25, Loyola 19
Colgate used a 7-0 run to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 12-7 lead in the first set. Four straight Greyhounds attack errors sparked the scoring surge, which was capped off by a
Cami Carfino ace. Colgate's lead stretched to seven (20-13) on a kill by
Libby Overmyer, and
Harper Snyder's finish at the net capped off the Raiders' first-set victory 25-19.
Set 2: Loyola 25, Colgate 12
Loyola evened the match with a convincing win in Set 2. Three straight kills by Abby Hamilton helped the Greyhounds build an 8-4 lead and that margin continued to grow. A kill by Lowe and service ace by
Sydney Jones cut the gap to 18-10, but that was as close as Colgate would get. Loyola scored seven of the final nine points to take the second set 25-12.
Set 3: Loyola 25, Colgate 20
Loyola raced out to a 5-1 lead and carried the momentum throughout the set. Colgate chipped away and finally drew even 16-16 with a 7-3 scoring surge finished off by a service ace from Overmyer. It was tied again at 17s but Loyola rallied to score the next four points and never looked back en route to the 25-20 result.
Set 4: Loyola 25, Colgate 21
Colgate took its first lead of the fourth set when three consecutive kills by Lowe (2) and Snyder made it 15-12 at the midway point. Kills by Thompson and Overmyer pushed Colgate's lead to 20-18, but Loyola shifted the momentum with five straight points and held on to secure the 25-21 victory in the final set.
FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Ryan Baker
"Give credit to Loyola, they were hungrier than us and played better than us in all areas of the game. Our serve and pass games were not strong and the result took care of itself.
"I think it's human nature to get a little comfortable after clinching the regular season title and our practice focus and efforts were lacking this week. It's a new week and I have complete faith in this team and our preparation. We look forward to finding out who we play Tuesday evening."
