HAMILTON – For the second consecutive week, senior defensive back and return specialist
William Gruber was recognized for making history as the Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week.
One week after becoming the second player in program history to return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, the senior sprinted into the record books once more with his second touchdown in as many weeks last Saturday at Holy Cross.
Saturday's return went for 99 yards, one shy of his mark at Cornell which tied the program record for longest kickoff touchdown return by a Colgate player. But after Saturday, Gruber now stands alone as the only Colgate Football player in Patriot League history to score two touchdowns on kickoff returns in a single season.
Henry White found paydirt twice on 12 returns as a senior in 1977. Barry Chubb also accomplished the feat twice on 10 returns as a junior in 1985. Gruber joins the elite list and becomes the first Raider to do it twice in a season since Colgate joined the Patriot League in 1986.
Chubb holds Colgate's career record with three kick returns for touchdowns.
Gruber also became the third player in Patriot League history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in a season, joining Bucknell's Dante Ross (2004) and Lafayette's Matt Smalley (2013).
Defensively, Gruber racked up a career-high 10 tackles, five of which were solo. He also added a pair of pass breakups to give him a team-best seven for the season.
