Colgate, Navy Thriller Ends in 1-1 Draw

Ally Giovino Scores in 1-1 Draw with Defending Patriot League Champs

HAMILTON – The rematch of the 2020-21 Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship between Colgate and Navy on Saturday afternoon at Beyer-Small '76 Field did not disappoint as the overtime thriller resulted in a 1-1 tie.

Historically a closely-contested matchup, the previous three regular season matchups between the Raiders and Mids have been determined by a one-goal margin. Two of those outings went into overtime.

In today's game, Navy struck first in the opening period in the 33rd minute with a shot into the top right of the net by midfielder Jenna Daunt on an assist by Alexa Riddle.

However, the Raiders, who looked for their first win against the Mids since 2018, remained steadfast in their pursuit. On her first goal of the year, Colgate sophomore Ally Giovino lasered the equalizer across her body to the bottom right side of the net to knot things at 1-1 in the 60th minute. The forward paced the game with six shots, four on goal.

Defender Ruby Diodati reeled a penalty kick off the left post in the 100th minute that put Navy on notice during the extra periods, but the team's efforts were unrewarded.

The next occasion the Raiders could encounter the Mids would be the Patriot League Tournament beginning October 31. The previous two conference tournament bouts favored Navy with the 2020-21 tournament final determined by penalty kicks to give Navy a 4-1 win.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

"Though we're glad not to lose, the team and staff are a bit disappointed in feeling like we had moments to come away with a win today. We won't take anything away from Navy, which played well and made it hard for us to establish a rhythm like we would have wanted to. Unlucky to hit the bar in overtime, but we had some chances in other parts of the game that we didn't capitalize on which wouldn't have put us in that position.

"We're going to have to try and be more clinical in putting those chances away as we move along in the season. Overall, I'm pleased with the response after going down in the first half. That was two good Patriot league teams battling hard for a result. We will hope to get back in the win column as we head into another tough stretch in the coming week."
