HAMILTON – Boston University ended Colgate's 10-game Cotterell Court winning streak with a 60-58 decision here Wednesday night.
Maren Durant made the deciding two free throws for the Terriers with 1.5 seconds remaining. Durant had secured an offensive rebound from Katie Nelson's missed shot and was fouled attempting a put-back layup.
After Durant converted twice, Colgate called timeout and advanced the ball to the front court. But the Raiders never could get off a final shot attempt and the home court winning streak was over.
Credit BU for making the most of its 42 field goal attempts – fewest by a Colgate opponent this season. The Terriers converted 21 for 50 percent, well above their season average of 39.5 percent.
They also scored the final points of each quarter, all of which were critical in such a tight ballgame.
Riley Childs converted a steal into a layup just before the first quarter horn for a 17-14 Terriers lead. Nia Irving scored on a jumper with 29 seconds left before halftime for a 29-24 BU advantage in the locker room. And Irving drove for a layup with three seconds remaining in the third quarter for a 47-40 Terriers cushion heading to the fourth.
Those plays helped set the stage for Durant's heroics, once again, in the closing seconds.
BU's largest lead was 40-30 on Irving's bucket with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Colgate narrowed the margin to 44-40 on
Tegan Graham's 3-point play with 2:23 showing before the Terriers scored the final three of the quarter.
It was 52-45 Boston University when Colgate put together its best stretch of the game.
Abby Schubiger swished a jumper and then Graham connected on a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer to tie the contest at 52-52.
Rachel Thompson followed with a steal and coast-to-coast layup before
Ava Williams went backdoor from Graham's assist and Colgate led 56-52 with 2:47 remaining.
It was an 11-0 Colgate run.
But BU called timeout and quickly regained its composure. The Terriers scored on three straight possessions to take back the lead 58-56.
Haley Greer then knocked down a baseline jumper to tie it with 21.6 seconds remaining.
Boston wound the clock down and worked for the last shot, which Nelson attempted and missed only to have Durant secure the rebound. She was fouled and then made the free throws for the win, Boston's fifth in a row.
Colgate and Boston University are now part a second-place tie along with Lafayette at 8-4 in the Patriot League. The Raiders dropped to 16-7 overall and BU is now 13-10.
Bottom Line
• Boston University 60, Colgate 58

Head Coach Bill Cleary (On the game) "I'm really proud of our fight and our resiliency. There were a couple of times where we could have said, 'It's not our night.' But we didn't; we did a great job of fighting back to get that lead.
"You've got to tip your cap to BU. We had gone on an 11-0 run but they called timeout and were able to regain control. I've got to be better at putting our players in position to close that out."
(On the difference) "The thing that's frustrating is if you look at the end of each quarter, we gave up two points. Those add up; that's eight points and we lose a two-point game. We've got to finish those quarters stronger. We've got to be better, because those points add up. Tonight, that came back and hurt us."
(On the Patriot League race) "There are a lot of games left. We told our players no win is too high and no loss is too low. We will think about tonight and what we could have done better, and then Thursday we are focusing on Loyola. We will fix our mistakes from tonight, move forward and be ready to take on Loyola on Saturday."
