CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 22 Oregon State scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute to complete a 2-1 comeback over Colgate on Sunday night at Paul Lorenz Field.
Colgate (0-1-1) was minutes away from returning from the West Coast with an unbeaten record against a pair of top 25 opponents. But Oregon State's Alex Cover headed in a loose ball for what proved to be the game-winning goal with 3:48 showing left in regulation.
Adrian Crespo started the play by lofting a long cross through traffic into the six-yard box.
Jacob Harris, who once again stood tall in net, battled a scrum in front but could not come up with the ball. Cover was at the doorstep for the loose ball and headed in the game-winner.
The Beavers win comes two years after Colgate stunned Oregon State 1-0 in Hamilton on a game-winning goal, coincidentally, in the 87th minute.
Freshman
Drew Fischer scored Colgate's goal in the fifth minute and gave the Raiders an early 1-0 advantage.
Ryan Krueger was taken down in the box to grant a penalty kick for Fischer, who beamed a right-footed shot to the right side of the net while the Beavers keeper dove left.
Entrenched in another defensive battle, Oregon State responded to the early goal with the next seven shots before knotting the match at 1-1 on a rebound from Eric Diaz in the 31st minute.
Fischer's marker was Colgate's lone shot on target. Krueger blasted a shot just wide early in the second half and the Raiders were held in check on four corner kicks in the frame.
Oregon State (1-1-0) controlled the pace for the majority of the second half and Colgate's back line held up until the eventual game-winner in the final minutes.
